If they don't upgrade, then it will grind to a halt, they have only limited amount of space, plus newer and faster servers make it possible to download things faster. The disruptiveness is only temporary until they sort out the gremlins in the system(s) that they use. Most of the new stuff to make it run more efficiently, need new configuration(s)

they are in fact pointless.
