could someone help me to understand the structure of a poem? I know the simple stuff - the rhythm and rhyme...but then there are the poems I see and hear... like those on deaf poetry jam.. check those out on youtube by the way... that don't seem to follow a specific structure...and I'd like to branch out into something like that... I just want to understand poems a bit more before I venture out into something different and it be a complete mess...Though I know the first thousand are never going to be perfect.. I'd still like to have some idea of what I'm doing =o ... Any help?

There are no rules for structure but the ones you set for yourself. It's art! So by virtue of that there is no "wrong form" because it's completely self-expressive, even in the structure. So go with what you like.

I gotta agree with backseatcynic, if you feel and hear within yourself some sort of flowing way and meaning in the words your putting down then just go with it and see where it leads. I often have a sort of melody going on in my head when I'm writing poems and find the words moving with that feeling. It's all up to you and what you find that moves your spirit.

If there are rules I'm in trouble. There's free flow poetry, rhyming, storytelling; all different. If you look at my poems and they're getting ready to go into an anthology, there are about 100. No two are alike. Some are for fun and silly, some are very deep and dark. The structure, as long as it's easy for the reader to follow the flow doesn't matter. You need some links.

They're all different and the structure is too, go with the flow.
