I would do the same thing, but only because i couldn't stand the smell of the baby. you should keep the food in the tent with you.

Put the food in your car every night. If you leave it out, the bears will be able to smell it.

As for the baby, put him in the car too.

you hang the food in the trees away from the camp s othat the bears dont tear your camp apart because they smell the food, the last thing you want when your sleeping is a 2 ton bear crawling through your tent searching for food

My boss goes camping with us. We keep the food in his tent.

Go to a camping store online (REI for example.) They usually have a storage device/bag that is bear-proof, esp. for people on long hikes nowhere near a car.

I've always heard that you are supposed to suspend your food between two trees to keep the bears away from it.
I guess the thought is that the bear can climb either of the trees but can't get to the food if it is in between the trees? I don't know...we have a trailer that we use for camping, and when we do tent, we lock the food in the Jeep.

Bears can drive Jeeps.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!

Just when I thought it was safe to store the Smores in the Jeep. My illusions have been destroyed.

I watched a programme about a guy who goes camping near bears every year in Alaska, and he had an electric fence to keep bears out.

But he also had a separate tent with these air tight sealed pod things - they stored food in that. That way there was no smell to attract the bears.

It depends on where you camp. In some places, like Yellowstone, the bears have learned to tear cars open(yes, they can do this)in order to get to food. When I camped in Algonquin Provincial Park, we had to hang our food high up, over a branch, away from the tree itself, about 50 yards from camp. I have heard from other campers there that recently the bears in that park have learned to chew through the rope in order to drop the food and get to it, so now, some people string up a brightly colored dummy rope, and use a camouflage rope to hang the bear bag. If you are in any bear country, DO NOT keep any food products in or near camp, and this includes gum and chapstick.
