He went along with the stimulus plan and got lynched by his party for it.
Ya got's to know what side of your bread is buttered.

sure. and if he were switching solely because he sympathizes with the Dems. now I guess it would be better or nobler because that would mean that his reason for doing it goes beyond his persoal goals and ambitions. but thats not the case. he said so himself in a few more words than ill use now-he switched so hed have a chance to win and so his political carreer could be saved. hes a slimeball in my eyes...

Darling Arlen always was more of a democrat than a republican. Its not really much of a betrayal IMO, everyone in Pennsylvania knew Specter was a republican in name only.

That being said, I really like Pat Toomey as a candidate. Seems like too many republicans forgot their fiscal responsibility roots, hopefully candidates like Toomey can fix this.

Not closed minded. Anytime someone leans from the right- that's what tends to happen.

Having a right-leaning political philosophy doesn't make you closed minded.

Let's face it, he has ALWAYS been a liberal. He was just in the wrong party. He should feel at home with his own kind.

Arlen Spectre has had a long and distinguised career in congress. He was always respected by Democrats and Republicans alike. He always voted for what was best for the people, not just bills that his own party sponsored.

In recent years this has put him at odds with the Republican party machine as it has moved farther and farther to the radical right and away from what's best for the majority of the people. Therefore the big Republican donors would no longer support him in the primaries.

He is definitely not 2-faced. He stated his honest reason for switching parties. This is his right to do. And he is definitely not the other word the original post had the poor taste to use.

not surprised, i guess. but it doesn't make it a good thing. political self-preservation is a disgusting thing to live by. politics in he u.s. are for the people, not for the individual...

Although I'm loving that Specter gave veto-proof power to the Dems. I hated all of the ship jumping rats following the 'pubs return to power. I still think that the best for the voters is to run as the party you will stick with until the next election. The voters have a right to expect that you are running in a party with certain guidelines. If you are able to explain how new changes in your party is negatively impacting you- then you should be able to change.
I believe Specter has demonstrated this.
