I'm sorry, that is simply idiotic.
The idea that the church can estimte the amount of time you spend in pergatory is nonsense.

I agree wholeheartedly, and the fact that people actually buy that drivel makes me sad.

two errors in replies so far...

1... you're not buying them... you're doing some service in exchange for them...

2... they arent keeping you out of hell... confessing/asking for forgiveness does that... but apparently it doesnt completely erase your sins-- you would still pay for them in purgatory... indulgences takes away from that...

its does seem-- questionable-- though...

I can see that, but even protestant churches do tithes. So what is the difference? (I'm not trying to argue, I am sincerely trying to understand this from a difference perspective.)

The perceived difference will vary, depending upon the individual, and upon the level of sarcasm and cynicism that is brought into the discussion.

I am not Catholic, or any other denomination for that matter, so I don't understand this but it seems silly to me that anyone could actually believe that they could buy their way out of a sin. What does "God" need the money for? Can someone please educate me on this.

Indulgences have got to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard of. Buy your way out of wrong doing. This goes to show how deeply rooted in money and instant gratification some people can be. This also shows that every man has a price, everyone can be bought off, apparently even God.
