Quite honestly anybody who has read about the Titanic, will know the reasearchers that have done this study are talking out their Arses.

There were many facters that lead to the sinking, and being Polite had nothing to do with it,it was more the fact The White Star lines Board of Directors were to bloody arrogant for their own good, but bare in mind,we are talking about 19th century values and stupidity.

They truelly believed what they said about the Titanic being unsinkable was right,no ship built out of steel ever was or ever will be unsinkable.

They blamed the Captain for going to fast through an Ice Pack, when in fact it was HE who wanted the directors on board to slow down,THEY ordered he push on to break the record,In todays world, the Company Directors wouldn't have a chance of getting those orders through, the Captain is the final say on what happens on board after him they talk to God.

After I read the story on ABC news I went to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Star_Line
and
https://www.titanicarchive.com/SearchResults.aspx

and read some facts about the real story.

The only quotes I gave an opinion on was the presentage of Americans to British passengers who survived and didn't survive .
Looking at the facts from a 21st century point of view the first thought I had was ,someone stood to make a s*** pot full of money from those three ships and didn't care one dot about the safety of crew or paying passengers.
Speaking of 19th century values, it had long been the practice of the wealthy to 'pay no attention to the comfort or safety of others.

It was also a very different time, and chivalry was considered something of importance - especially in the "upper class". There were quite a few very rich and well known people that made a choice to stay behind and go down with the ship, because they lived by a far different creed than most of us do today.

Of course, on the other hand, there were very important class distinctions too. Those in the "expensive" seats had a far better chance of survival, than those of the least expensive ones.

Quote:

Category Numbers Survivors %Survived Lost % Lost
First Class 329 199 60.5 % 130 39.5 %
Second Class 285 119 41.7 % 166 58.3 %
Third Class 710 174 24.5 % 536 75.5 %
Crew 899 214 23.8 % 685 76.2 %
Total 2,223 706 31.8 % 1,517 68.2 %

John Jacob Astor, perhaps the wealthiest man on board at the time, did not fight his fate :

Quote:
Astor mentioned his wife's "delicate condition" when asking an officer if he could take one of several empty seats in her lifeboat, but the officer refused. Astor took it like a gentleman. He lit a cigarette and tossed his gloves to his wife. Several days later his partly crushed, soot-stained body was found floating in the Atlantic with $2,500 in a pocket. Experts believe Astor may have been hit by a falling smokestack.

Remember that this British mentality of the upper class can be seen in many cases on the battlefields of history as well. At Waterloo, cannons fired cannonballs with burning fuses.

As men stood in their squares, sometimes those cannon balls would roll up to them, having missed their targets - with their fuses still smoking.

It was considered incredibly bad form to run, and any officer that did would be considered by all (and especially his own class) as being a coward.

So some literally stood there, and were blown up - and died true gentlemen and heroes.

Of course, not all would act so heroically, but many did. That was a far more nobler time, and dying honorably was far better than living life under a taint of scandal.

Some of the richer people on board did spend the rest of their lives with a whisper of scandal, for having survived.

IMO, this may have been true for the poor souls with second or third class cabins or the 'staff' on board , but I find it hard to believe about the first class Brits, same holds true for the Americans .

well DUH, stands it to reason most if not all the sailors and the ' staff' like kitchen staff, waiters, cleaning staff , mechanics etc... were British.

Probally because most if not all the Americans were first class passengers.

Is this just a 'rumor'/'tall tale'?
One of the British survivers on one of the life boats really a man dressed in womans clothing ??

I would like to know exactly how the f*** these 'researchers' managed to operationalise and measure such ambiguous values as 'politeness' and 'good manners'. What, do they really think that while a load of impolite Americans and continental Europeans rushed onto the lifeboats, polite English passengers just stood their patiently and said "well, I say, how impolite".
