Writing an essay

Well i need to re-write my 20 mark essay on the russian civil war because after some self mark-age i dont get a good enough pass mark
the reason i post this is because i chose the wrong question and i really want to go back over and choose a broader topic
i chose "Why did the Whites win the Russian Civil War" but this is meant to be an 8 mark question which i took from a past paper
its too late to change my topic now. Can anyone suggest a way i can stick with the Russian civil war but alter the question to be broader that just why the whites lost.
