I think my theory may help to answer the problems raised by the concept of a Star Trek-style 'Transporter'; some philosophers have asked what would happen if your complete physical structure was destroyed and intstantly replicated eslewhere, complete with memories. Would the same mind still exist 'within' the new body? What if it malfunctioned, and a new 'you' was created, but the current 'you' failed to vanish and there were two identical clones? Which one would possess 'your' conscious mind?

The answer is that the original mind is destroyed and the new body, even in the malfunction scenario, thinks that it has been constantly conscious since before transportation because it contains the physical imprint of memories. Both the person at the other end of the transporter and the person left behind have new minds.
