I can't stand being stared in the eyes non stop. I don't mind back and forth though!

eye contact's pretty awesome,
its how i seduce my lady friends

as long as you don't over do it and stare then it really helps let people know you're actually listening to them.

I try to maintain eye contact if at all possible. Quite a few years ago I went on a job interview and the interviewer had a twitch and I know it was wrong of me but I couldn't look her in the eye because of the twitch. I felt like a huge heel after that and have tried to be better since.

On and Off eye contact is quite normal just to show that you're listening and to acknowledge what they're talking about, but too much or too little is just weird. And it is overrated, some people think that if you don't make eye contact it means your lying, not!! some people are shy, some people don't like to be looked at on a constant basis, very much overrated, means absolutely nothing, unless you're trying to get someone's attention then a look once in a while is fine till you get it.JMO

I dunno if this really goes here cause I don't know if it's bad manners or not...

But am I the only person that can't make eye contact with someone for more than a couple of seconds?

I look at someone's eyes then I have to look elsewhere like 2 seconds later. It freaks the crap outta me!

I think that some people are just hard to maintain eye contact with!

I work a service counter, and we have to make at least initial eye contact, but I now there are some patrons, (usually of other cultures) that this weirds out so I try and focus on other things. Usually me looking at the vague direction of your head, means I'm listening. If not, I may not really be paying attention...then I miss hear things, then the conversation usually takes a "random tangent trip"

Ha!! I usually tend to intimidate people Cause I look at them Directly in the eye and they turn and look all around my face except my eyes.

I think I used to do this too - it got so bad that I could make babies cry! I have learned to not look at someone who I don't know very well directly in the eyes all the time. (I think it creeps most people out) I have learned one trick, however, if you don't want to stare into the eyes of someone - you can alternate looking at their mouth, eyes, and eyelids. The person will still think you are looking at them in the eyes, but it won't be such a "freaky" stare - and changing your focus from time to time makes it less boring.

Interesting. I've noticed that I don't maintain eye contact as much as I would like. I'll have to observe who I have good eye contact with and who I don't. I like to stare at my kids but that's only because they're so cute. My son freaks out when I look at him too long.
