I'm sure if Lars from Metallica wrote a book and it ended up in the library, there'd be some kind of law suit involved.

But people do it anyway and no one calls them criminals. I feel like a kid saying to her parents, "but EVERYone is doing it!"

If you rip music, it's theft. If you photocopy an article, no one minds.

Hell, the whole library is robbing author's of book sales.

Meh. I dunno.

No one yells "CRIMINAL!!!" at me when I jaywalk either.

It's not theft if you rip music. It's a copyright violation.

It's the exact same crime as copying an article from Newsweek.

You have to ask yourself what you care about most:

1) Following the letter of the law and not being a criminal (ie, not copying articles OR music)
2) Not being perceived as a criminal (copying articles but not music)
3) Doing what you think is morally acceptable (?)
4) Not getting caught (copying articles AND music)

I know that I would have much more fun is I did shout "CRIMINAL" when I saw someone jaywalking. Tickles me to think about.

I choose 3. Just not sure how to define that yet.

Frankly, I don't do it myself - but good luck if you want some nice cheap choons that way. I don't like ripoffs, and the studios can afford the lost sales on their overpriced cd's, and people like George Michael certainly can

Like I said, your choice.

I know some guys who design software (games). They get uppity about it as one in particular said "I'm small time, someone cracking my software was taking bread from me that week" Bit melodramatic, but he has a point.
I'm aquainted with a guy who's an increasingly famous children's author (Note I'm not name dropping ). Wouldn't copy his books, as I know him and know exactly how he's worked his arse off over the last three years to get where he is.

Sony music - fair game - maybe

Technically, yes it's wrong. Realistically I would be hard pressed to call someone a criminal who copied a cd they could check out of the library for free over and over again if they wished, just so they could listen to it at their leisure. Now if you copy it and sell it for a profit, then you're pretty much a ruthless criminal.
