Looking to buy a new desktop, but totally confused by processors!

Want something that can play games reasonably well but don't want to pay a fortune!

Is a core 2 quad necessary?

Help much appreciated!

Core 2 Quad isn't very cost effective at the moment.

Core 2 Duo, however, is. Definitely the way to go. Depending on your budget, you can put together a Core 2 Duo processor (2.0 GHz or greater) system with 2GB of RAM and a mid-high end video card (8800GT, HD 3850/3870) for a very reasonable price.

i know someone who has a quad core, yes it's amazing, but just isn't needed, a duel core processor is perfect for games atm
