A defiant Alex Salmond challenged the evidence of recent opinion polls yesterday, saying he believed that Scotland would be independent within ten years.

i wasn't aware that we were. . . . britain still has its own laws. but occassionally the EU can overturn them if they consider to be unfair or against human rights.

EU nations are obviously not under one European Law. Just look at euthanasia, drug policy, terror detention laws and abortion. If you can find a European consensus on that, you must have been smoking dope.

As for Scotland's independence, I voted SNP, but independence in 10 years seems awfully dreamy. Hell, a passport is valid for ten years. They'd have to start taking a census today on who is Scots and who is not. Before Westminster hands Holyrood power over the natural resources Scotland has we will have to endure plenty of politicians stalling, debating, lying and threatening invasion. I can't think of a single large party at Westminster that would let Scotland go without a fight.

Also, you would have to divide up the armed forces. Who serves in who's army? And the NHS. Would we still be part of the Commonwealth? And if so, does that mean we will still have the same Royal Family? After all, the English Crown went to Scotland; not the other way around.

Call me cynical, but I think it will take a wee bit longer than a decade to work this out. It took almost half that time just to build our parliament!
