This goes for all fruit that grows on trees... even potatoes :P (WHICH DONT GROW ON TREES I KNOW :@
Ok here's my question....

If apple gets larger due to the starch build up (energy) from photosynthesis... if the plant then went through a patch in late summer / early autumn where it didn't photosynthesise that much... would the apple/potatoe get smaller? as it uses its stored energy in starch form for its own energy to live? or would the apple/potatoe stay the same size?

and what would the apple look like if it had to shrink? would it have extra skin the same as if a human went on a strict diet?

well.. the friut will not surely develop well.. most of the time it will grow a bit and fall down..!

also the real taste will not be there if the plant cannot photosynthesise well

The answer to your question is yes.

Trees growing in soil with poor nutrient levels and trees that receive an inadequate amount of sunlight produce smaller fruit.

Well to be fair you said "all fruit that grows on trees... even potatoes" which implies that a potato is a fruit that grows on a tree.

Potatoes are neither
