i have suffered from migrane for 18 years now and though i only get approx. one really bad one a month it drives me nuts!
i have tried altering my diet, not as much caffeine, chocolate, or cheese etc. and tried taking herbal rememdies, but only really strong painkillers ever work, and then my stomach is off for about a week afterwards because the painkillers wreck my stomach!
i get distorted vision, slurred speech, and am unable to sleep when it strikes.
does anyone know of any kind of cure or way of preventing this?

i know how you are feeling i have been borthered with them too... but only for about 3 years not as long as you.

two years ago i did a full body detox and found that it helped alot.... they disappered for about a whole year.... now i have them but only once in a while if i eat the wrong things.

the detox i went on was herbal rememdies.... which consisted of woodworm and clove tablets and blackwood (i think thats the name) drops.... i had to go off lots of foods that had addivites and sugars in them while on it.... but i found that i worked really well for and had tons of energy which i didnt have before....i found this full body detox at my local herbalist.... i can find the name of the type of diet if you would like to find more information on it....

when all everything else fails i just have to go to bed and sleep in off in a dark room....

harsh,
have you seen a doctor about it?
sounds severe enough to merit it.

There are several very recent products on the market which are specifically working for migraine. Please do not take "painkillers". Migraine is a pathology that has precise and always better understood etiological base (with other words we know why it develops). In oder to have a correct evaluation and to equilibrate your situation I advise you to get neurological evaluation with a specialist. He will then set up a correct pharmacological management for the problem and follow up on it until you manage yourself well.

For ethical and legal questions I cannot give you any advice on the name of the pharmaceuticals in question.

Can you get a referral from your generalist?

I dont think there is a cure for migranes. Not that Ive heard of anyway. But you are best going and speaking to your doctor as they will be able to advise you medically.

The only thing I can recommend is, when you have one, lay down and relax in a cool, dark room.

i've suffered from migraines for years. my doctor told me that they are a neurological condition and that traditional painkillers will not work in the long run. i have used a drug called Imitrex to alleviate them, and it works wonders. you should be checked to make sure you do not have high blood pressure or any underlying heart condition prior to taking the medication, because it can cause elevated blood pressure in some patients. i'm not sure if this medication is sold by the same trade name in the UK but the chemical name is sumatriptan.

this drug is a life saver. it is literally the only thing that has helped me. it also resolves the nausea, dizziness, and "aura" that accompany migraines.

Before the attacks, do you experience and "aura" that is "little flies" or black points hindering your view, alteration of colors of "flashes" of light?

Did the frequency go up in the recent month and / or severity?

What is the name of the "painkiller" that was prescribed to you?

I take maxalt melt on perscription for my migranes. It works on the area of the brain responsible for migranes (including the symptoms like nausea as well as the pain) rather than being just a painkiller.
I used to take migraleave which does the same (even comming in 2 different types of tablet - a pink one to take first and then yellow ones to take after a few hours if the migrane is still there). That used to help as well but i had to stop taking it when i got put on medication for another condition that interacted with and ingredient in it.

As well as these medications i use a rio light therapy mask which flashes a specific patern and frequency of ligh thro your closed eyelids and really does seem to help both at the time of a migrane and also to help prevent them when used regularly (it also helps with PMS, insomnia, and a few other conditions so it's worth the price although it's not cheap)

I also find 4head stick, although it doesn't cure the migrane, does help a lil bit if i use it wen i get the very first hint of the headache and then regularly until it's over. It's an all natural thing that you rub on your forehead and the back of your neck and it gives a tingly, cool feeling that can feel soothing

It can also be a good idea to make sure that you eat regularly with healthy diet coz drop in blood sugar can be a trigger for migranes, and try using relaxation tecniques when you begin to feel the very first symptoms (some people can notice things like difficulty in consentration and neck stifness over 24 hours before even the aura begins to show up and if you start combating the migrane at that point then it may not materialise at all! Also try to make sure that you have a regular sleep pattern coz geting more or less sleep than you're used to can be a trigger to migranes too.
There can be so many different potential triggers actually that aren't the well known ones so if you're getting them regularly then it can be good to keep a 'migrane diary' where you write down wot you eat, wot you do, how you feel, sleep and activities you do, any stresses you are under or things you are worying about etc every day and mark when mirgane symptoms (or any discoforts or illnesses at all even if you wouldnt normaly associate them with a migrane). You may then begin to notice patterns emerging over a space of a few months and this can make you more aware of things that effect or warn of migranes. You may then be able to pick up things you can do to lessern or even prevent them.

Hope some of that helps. Feel free to message me if you want to discuss any of wot I've said.

dont go near the bagpipes thread

Conventional medicine would say that you take a migraine tablet as soon as you feel onset. If you can identify any triggers that would be useful. Keep a migraine diary and describe what you was doing when it came on and what type of migraine it was. You can ask your GP to refer you to a headache clinic and if you take the diary with you it will help the Neurologist a great deal.

I started getting them winter last year. i get an aura in which it distorts one point of my focus, then enlarges. then it ends within 10-40 minutes, and the headache starts. and it HURTS! ouch it's really a killer. it's when i get too cold or i skip a meal (by accident. i take great care not to skip them because i know what the effects will be- nausea, weakness, headaches, inability to concentrate, cough...) and i also get terrible nausea. i got them all through until early spring, about two a month or something, then they stopped, and i suddenly had another one a couple weeks ago. it reminded me of how horrible they were. so maybe winter is a trigger also.
nothing stops it apart from sleep. natural sleep.
by the doctor i was instructed to take two aspirin, one ibuprofen, and one motilium for the nausea. nothing helps.
i just bear it for the day, in which i can do nothing.
