In reality, in this country, it's no more dangerous picking up a hitch hiker than talking to a stranger. Technically there could be question marks on both sides - it he a rapist cruising the motorway looking for an easy pick up? As I said, in THIS country you are reasonably safe. Nine-tenths of them are students - penniless bums usually trying to work their way up North.
If you're thinking of trying your luck hitch hiking, NOTHING works faster than what I used to do - walk at a very determined pace with a motorcycle crash helmet under your arm, thumbing your way with the other WITHOUT looking round. You can put money on it, within fifteen minutes you'll get a lift! 8)
