The Earth Liberation Front (/modules.php?name=Search&q=ELF]ELF[/url]) has officially claimed credit for spiking trees in two counties in southern Indiana. This is the third ELF action in the Bloomington area this year.

In a communiqu? sent to the North American Earth Liberation Front Press Office, the ELF stated, "The Earth Liberation Front would like to make public that we have placed hundreds of spikes in trees in the timber sales that are about to be cut on Crooked Creek Road in Brown County and in Monroe County."

An estimated twenty or so spikes have already been found by state officials.

The communiqu? continued, "These spikes have been placed both high and low in the trees to prevent the cutting of the trees. The trees are now worthless to the mill and dangerous to cut down. We ask that this action be widely publicized in order to prevent injury to any timber workers who might be working in the area. It is not our intention to cause harm to anyone."

The ELF is an international underground organization that used direct action in the form of economic sabotage to stop the continued exploitation and destruction of the earth. Since 1997, the ELF has inflicted well over $30 million in damages to entities profiting off the destruction of the environment.

"We also hope that this action will discourage companies from buying timber sales in State Forests" the communiqu? stated.

In January, the ELF claimed credit for a fire that destroyed a luxury home under construction in the Sterling Woods Development in the Bloomington area that threatened the Lake Monroe watershed. An estimated $300,000 in damages were inflicted. In April, the ELF also took responsibility for sabotaging road construction equipment and setting fire to a truckload of wood chips at a road construction site in the Bloomington area. Some $500,000 in damages were caused by this action.

The communiqu? finished by stating, "This is a warning to all those who want to turn the beings of the earth into cash. We are committed to protecting every last square inch of our forests that remain. Too much has been lost, let corporations beware, the ELF is everywhere."
