I think it was Marx who said that Religion was the Opium of the Masses.

In today's society I think that consumerism is the opium of the masses.

What do you think? Those Marxs Brothers knew nothing.

I think the concept of God as spread by the ruling classes was the opium of the masses, however that does not mean God, or believe in God itself, is the Opiate of the masses.

My understanding was that the poor had nothing to console them in their poverty other than their religion and the notion that suffering in poverty was a good thing for them. The old story that it would be easier for a camel to go throught the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven.

I thought it meant the ruling classes kind of used God, as a reason for the working class working so hard, so as they wouldn't revolt.

Maybe i took a totally wrong view on it.

To be honest my only problem with Marx is that he was so athiest.

Well I think it was the ruling class who used the insitution of god to validate and assert their rule.
Itacts as a drug to soothe and hide the alienation/enstrangement and suffering that they face by promising eternal bliss in the afterlife. If you play the rules. The rules of the bourgeosise.
Agree with bendover that consumerism in the new weed of the masses. I kinda hooked to it
