... the fish are important. Do you want the entire ecosystem to die off because of human greed at having 20 minute long showers?
Plus, Victoria 'allows' South Australia only a tiny percentage of the water of the Murray.

Actually main use of Murray River system is for irrigation.
While NSW and Victoria get most percentage of water when calculated at volume per area SA is double that of Vic and almost double that of NSW.
If it isn't raining then the entire ecosystem is affected - not just fish.
A bit naive thinking human greed is "20 minutes showers" when the main user of water is industry - to supply you with products that you buy.

Yes. Irrigation on crops that are totally unneccessary and pointless in an Australian environment. It is greedy and stupid to be growing cotton or rice in Australia.

So you suggest we import rice as well just so we can become even more vulnerable to overseas ecomonomies?
Rice is Australia's third largest cereal grain export, and the ninth largest agricultural export so rice exports , (and cotton) not only keep people off the dole but means we are bringing some of the money back into the country instead of sending it out.

The more we can export the better we can protect ourselves from global influences. The Surplus that Rudd has tapped into to keep Australia's economy from following USA is mainly due to what we have exported. Without it we would be worse off by now.

Not just cotton and rice irrigated from the Murray the the way.
NSW - mainly pastures (sheep, cows etc.), cereals, rice, grapes and citrus.
VICTORIA - Pasture followed by grapes, cereals and orchards
SOUTH AUSTRALIA - horticulture and pasture

I've only just seen this thread, and although there are some very good points put forward, except for the Galah who wanted to talk about war, there's one very good point that none of you have even thought about.

"Why is it that Storm water and Flood water is still left to flow out to sea, instead of being channeled into reservoirs for future use???",I know there's a lot of rubbish flows through as well, but can't most of that go to land fill or recycling??.

Projects like the Snowy River scheme would be built in todays world, the Greenies have far to much say,I haven't heard a word from them about what kind of impact a desalination plant would cause and the cost of what I suggested would be around the same as one of those plants,so why can't it be done??.

One of the biggest problems of all the past Federal Governments that I can see is they haven't really thought about what will happen in the future and made plans or created jobs by starting projects for the conservation of water,we are in a Global warming crisis, whether this be caused by us Humans or something the Earth goes through every few million years, we really don't know, there was a scream went up when scientists discovered the whole in the ozone layer and how WE had caused it,then it was realized it had been there all the time, just that they didn't have the equipment to know about it until then.

Water is the Life Blood of this Earth, and every year we allow millions of Liters of Rain water to just run down the gutters and out to sea,and I believe it's high time that WE the public had a say in what's been happening for years, let's face it,if we wash our car on the street and let the suds run into the drain we cop a fine for not only wasting water, but for polluting as well, yet the Water management sections of the Government can allow all the rain water to just run out to sea, maybe it just me,but I can't understand why????????.

What about Melbourne's 180 litre a day limit. It's so stupid, who measure how many litres they use a day?!?!?!?

Ummmmm ..... Suggesting a limit must be working because Melbournians are using less water.

In our area we have enough water to last us till the start of summer so you bet we are watching how much water we use.... much more so than those in Melbourne.

We're on level 4 water restrictions up here (Central Coast NSW) meaning that we can't use a hose - ever! The dam is around 20% capacity with no decent rainfall predicted in the near future.

Water is going to be Australia's biggest problem in years to come. We should stop spending so much on sending our teenagers to fight American wars and spend more on looking after our own country.

How far away is the dam from the ocean?..If it isn't to far, why don't they build a desalination plant and pipe water from the ocean to the dam? If ships can make fresh water out of salt water, why not use that technology to bolster the supply of fresh water to population centers close to the coast?

It is not a long term issue... just that we have had drought (in some parts of Oz) for up to 10 years. In our area (central victoria) we now have had had sufficient rain so that our restrictions have been eased a little. (Plus we have tapped into underground water)

We are in the process of building a network of pipes up and down the east coast to distribute water. Floods in the north while the south is parched so take it from one area and move it to another seems logical.
Big scale desalination plants tend to be not very cost effective but they are building one in Victoria.

Both schemes are being met with resistance and controversy.
