freedom is a confusing, sometimes - dujac

"Whereas by supposing they have given up themselves to the absolute arbitrary power and
will of a legislator, they have disarmed themselves, and armed him to make a prey of them
when he pleases..." John Locke, A Essay Concerning the true original, extent, and end of
Civil Government (1690)

"The freedom of each individual can only be the freedom of all." Friedrich Durrenmatt

"Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else
follows." George Orwell

"I need this wild life, this freedom." Zane Grey

"Freedom is the right to live as we wish." Epictetus

"Hence it is that all armed prophets have conquered, and the unarmed ones have been
destroyed." The Prince by Nicolo Machiavelli, written in 1505, published in 1515.

in Australia we are NOT armed...

therefore we do not NEED to be armed...

(firearms are self-perpetuating "if he's got one I want one" )

a single firearm death in a year is a major news event

WE have the freedom of knowing that when we walk down the street everyone else is NOT "packing heat"

I am not a fan of guns. My husband loves guns. I agree that people have always and will always kill people. I think the astronomical gun violence figures in this country have much more to do with the overall violent mentality than the access to guns.

However, I think that gun owners should be registered and have to go through a broker of some sort to sell their guns so that if a gun is used in a crime it will be easy to track down who had it last. People should be held accountable if a gun they purchased is used in a crime or an accidental shooting. People should have to take gun safety classes before buying a gun. So on and so forth.

There are always going to be nut jobs, but if guns were illegal only the criminal nut jobs would have them. So, I'm not a fan of any sort of ban. But I think it should be harder to get a gun and people should be forced to be responsible with their guns.

The need to be armed may not have come up yet, in Australia. Uncle Sam and his friends have been watching over you.

Drugs are illegal but anyone who wants drugs can find them. If guns were illegal only lawbreakers would have them. Guns are here to stay no matter what anyone thinks about it.
