well depends on if your using the battery or mains to power the laptop, if your using mains then it shouldn't go off, but if your using the battery then it will, but i wouldn't recommend taking out the battery if the laptop is on, even if you are using the mains.

how old is the laptop?

Just asking because I didn't get a user manual and it wasn't until my battery went on the fritz that I took it back to the shop and was told that if you use it regularly on the mains then you should take the battery out because it overheats and shortens the battery life.

I'm gonna get shouted at by someone for saying it but that is what the shop said to me

I always have it plugged in because it makes the screen brighter. I can't see the screen so well when it's not plugged in

There maybe a button (or combination of buttons) that you can press to make the screen brighter, allthough this will make the battery run out quicker

OK so basically an update;

I took the battery out last night while my laptop was still plugged into the mains... I also then took the charger out to give to my mum (we have one charger between two laptops) and it appeared that my laptop was running on nothing! It was still running even though it was not plugged into the mains and had no battery in it.

I shut my laptop down like normal and I put the battery back in before I went to bed, and this morning I woke up and turned it on to see if it was any different and it wouldn't start unless it was plugged into the mains.

It's still saying "no battery is detected".
