Why do people assume a relationship wouldn't work out without even trying?

Or is that just an excuse?

I think that its an excuse to stop themselves from risking getting hurt/trying something they fail at/messing up a good friendship for the sake of what could just be a short fling.

Sometimes it's just not worth the effort

It is a way to escape. It is a way to not try. It is a way to not bother with it. Otherwise, shouldn't the person give some real reasons? For example, "You're a Democrat and I'm a Republican" or "You like Sex in the City and I hate it." If there are reasons accompanying though . . . well, let's just say that some relationships would not work out in a milliont years, or they would create too many problems and conflicts.

It would mean thinking about some things in their life? Such as, will this person let me follow my dreams or something like that?

Anyway, I don't know why I'm making that a point, as all the guys I've dated I would have NEVER pictured myself with. So I guess you should try, because you never know.
