She stares out blankly into the blankness of the night,
A blackness broken only by a few scattered yard lights
Twinkling in their white and yellow glow.

Every once in a while a car passes on the road,
And she lifts her head hopefully from the sill;
Ten now have gone since she began to watch,
Not one noticing the depressed face staring out from its dirty window,
Cracked just enough for the smoke to curl gently out of her lips
And onto the wind.

Not one stopped to tell her to put down the pills
Or to smile because they are glad she is alive.
They all have their own business to attend to,
Their own lives to worry about.

One by one she takes her pills,
Chases them with her vodka.

The bottles are both soon gone,
And her body begins to fell so comfortably numb.
She lays her head back on the sill
And continues to watch the cars traveling by her window,
All attending to their own lives.
