I had that problem with soil, I put in some railroad ties and made elevated beds. Filled them with organic compost and soil and grew awesome calabacitas.

Woot!

I saw a young mantis today - about an inch long.
... I'd like to believe it is the 3rd generation of the ones I got a few years back.

I saw 3 more over the weekend in a completely different part of the yard, and today I saw one patrolling my potato plants!

... cheap thrills for us suburbanites ...

I can't say that I have seen any here over the previous ... 15-20 years.

these younger mantises tries to their tricks to down by the sea harbors,to pick up young and old sea mantises at the docks. so, mm, you let them hookies do their tricks in your backyard. good for you!

4th generation.
#1 Small, green, about 1/4 inch
#2 More brown, about 1/2 inch.

So probably from two different egg sacks!

no wonder you are having problems with your garden with railroad ties. you just gave a green light to any railroad train to go through your backyard!

NIce.

Everything is dry, brown and dead (mostly) here. I keep a few birdbaths full of water, so when it isn't too hot we have plenty of birds. But many of the insects are missing; no mantis, no katydids, only a few carpenter bees over a month ago, haven't seen a bumble bee in over a year... etc... except flies.... we have flies...

We're in kind of a dry spell - nothing drought-like. Maybe a little spurt of rain here and there. I cut my grass (weeds) for the first time in almost 3 weeks the other day - that's when I saw the mantis.
