PS

Crying about the EC is a waste of time.

There is literally no chance that a Constitutional Amendment getting rid of the EC will happen.

Maybe in 50 years... but not now.... perseverating about it is meaningless... we'll have a dictator before the EC goes away.

The only thing that might/could be done is for the states to adjust their rules/laws so that it isn't a "Winner Take All" for EC votes.

I think that is up to each state, but yes.

You're all probably right unfortunately. Just for the edification of those interested; according to National Archives the 12th amendment is the most challenged amendment in US history. Over "700 proposals to have been introduced in Congress to eliminate the Electoral College." Polls say over 69% of lawyers in the American Bar Association favored abolishing it in 1987. 75% of US citizens polled believed it should be abolished in 1981. I wonder what it is now.

Ok here it is. According to a recent Hill Harris X poll over 51% of US citizens polled believe it should be abolished and according to the Gallup polling it's 61%. Obviously our education system is going to s@#t. 35% answered "what's an electoral college?" <<<< I made that one up.

To repeal an amendment calls for 2/3 support in the House and the Senate, then the states must ratify it also by a 2/3 vote. It's only happened once; the 21st amendment which was the one that repealed the 18th. The 18th instituted prohibition

That is so pathetic!

I wish someone out in the "real world" would ask me what an "electoral college" is, so I could answer "It's where you go to learn how to vote you stupid f***!"

But when they answered, "really?" I'd probably have to slam my head against a wall.

Americans are ignorant on purpose.

I really like the 21st Amendment, not only for it's subject matter but for its unique brevity, uncommon in government documents.

>>> 3/4ths of the states have to ratify. <<<

So...

> 2/3rds of the H.R.
> 2/3rds of the Senate

Then

> 3/4ths of the states

Right now the H.R. is a 51.2% (D) to 48.8% (R) split so no Constitutional amendment on the E.C. is happing there.

The Senate is 50% (R) - 50% (D) (plus the VP) split so no Constitutional amendment on the E.C. is happing there.

The state legislatures control are something like 61% (R) to 37% (D) split so no Constitutional amendment on the E.C. is happing there.

Note: The Republicans are the only political party to benefit from the E.C. system, so they will never go for a change.

Any amendment to get rid of the E.C. is dead on arrival... no... before arrival.

At least the president and the governors have no say in the matter.

Ah ok, I stand corrected. I think you are right about the Republicans benefiting from it. Do you think the unofficial "Two Party System" benefits as well? Basically the electoral college makes it almost impossible for a third party candidate to ever take the seat.

It's a sad commentary on our society that an amendment banning alcohol can get repealed but odds of getting rid of the electoral college are slim.

You might be right on this, but a strong 3rd party could force coalitions like many other countries have...

Example:

To win a candidate needs 270 E.C. votes... out of 538.

The GOP gets 260
The Dems get 250
The "3rd party" get 28

Now the 3rd party and it's agenda become important... of course our Constitution has a few hurdles that would have to be overcome or worked around... etc...

Just to clarify... I don't like the EC either, I simply see it benefiting the current systems of power and there not being much support to getting it over turned.

Better (more accurate) change could probably be made by making more states change their rules to split votes instead of winner take all. That, if coordinated well, has a much better chance of success.

Assuming... you think the system is broken, and doesn't need the representative quality and checks and balances it was created with.

Cruz knows trump won't be around forever (one way or another). He's playing to be the defacto successor to trumpism if trump himself doesn't select someone.
