Why the paranoia.

Technology is amazing.

Back in the olden days computers were monolithic (well the Kernels still are, on some systems) and needed punch cards. Look at them now.

I remember when I watched the film Stealth (amazing film), and now the Americans have the Loyal Wingman program. Its like "Dude my fantasies are becoming a reality).

And the Russians have that awesome Terminator wannabe robot, damn that thing is awesome.

Plus go buy some Parrot drones, and see what you can do with some Python code and some swarming, damn that s*** is neat.

Damn, technology makes me hard bro.

Yes, technology is amazing.

But as this thread highlights, it has it's dark side.
Sometimes we rely on it too much.
It's not always as dependable as we'd like - or like to think it is.
Unintended consequences.
Criminal purposes.

Its the user of the tech that is the issue not the tech itself.

Especially the younger generation.

No one is forcing you to rely on it. Facebook is a choice not a necessity (my last FB update was a couple of ywars ago).

Stop making assumptions on how it will be used. Its just a tool, like a gun. The person who holds the trigger decides how it is used. Dont like what people can do with tech. Create your own tech to protect yourself. Encrytion ain't rocket science bro.

Me personally, I am happy I can do certain things with a click of my mouse or press of a button before I have my first cup of tea for the day.

PSA:
I just got phished by a phake Netflix warning that my payment information needs to be re-entered. "Just Click Here" to log in and enter info!!

No I didn't fall for it.

Oddly enough, we were just talking about phishing at work ....
We rec'd an unannounced email, legitimately sent from HR, but the sender was named something like "Year End Review" and asking us to use the form in the attached PowerPoint.
Classic phishing tactics.

I swear they're listening.

When you think you turned it off, but it really isn't:

Camera

Though the camera was turned off before the incident, it was captured by the two-minute buffer on the device,

“You don’t need to hack people to spy on them if you can get people to willingly download this app to their phone. By uploading contacts, video chats, location, what more intelligence do you need?”

ToTok

It seems, under the covers - deep under the covers - it is state sponsored by UAE .. and possibly US (?).

Been awhile since I posted here ...

Muslim Pro, a prayer app with over 98 million downloads, reminds users about daily prayers and provides readings from the Quran. The company calls it "The most popular Muslim app."

It also tracks users' location and sells that location data to brokers — and the US military is one of the buyers, according to a new report from Vice's Motherboard.

But of course they are abiding by US laws and not tracking any US Citizens data, or through other apps ....

There are a number of foreign and questionable hits on a search of "military purchases metadata", but this was from Business Insider. I first saw it on RT.

... I wonder how full that secret Nevada datacenter's storage is these days?

Oh, and what also reminded me of this thread...

Recently my wife and I were discussing a particular insurance claim/home repair.

Now my wife is getting ads on Facebook for that particular home repair.

I've only searched for a contractor for that on my machine a few months ago...

... and she has an iPhone...

I once mentioned writing and selling werewolf erotica in a book club meeting on zoom. My iphone was right next to me With in the hour and now 6 months later, all of us are still plagued with ads for sites selling werewolf erotica stories.

Really, FB I would rather have fairy erotica, I've never actually looked up ordered or read werewolf erotica, it was just the topic in the "romance" self publishing for money formula i was discussing

And the spying continues.

A day or two ago I searched for "Zoo York" by Paul Okenfold and played it on YouTube on a PC

Today it showed up in my Pandora channel on my "Cell phone" (not active, just an IP device I use for streaming music)

I think Fringe used this ... or maybe it was Torchwood...?
