We have a new Director General of the BBC and he has said that one of his first jobs is to tackle "perceived left wing bias" in his organisation. Apparently Donald Trump, Brexit and the Tories are getting a raw deal, especially on comedy panel shows. Worst offending shows will be "taken off the schedule" and there must be a "better balance of satirical targets".

Who is it that is "perceiving" the "bias" is unstated. Certainly not those who call the BBC the "Brexit Broadcasting Corporation".

Sadly, putting this alongside other acts of the UK's Government that seem intended to shift power away from state institutions (and into the prime minister’s office) I begin to fear.

Next up, boundary changes.......

Here in the states, we call that Gerrymandering.
Adjusting district boundaries to give a particular party an advantage in the vote.

At least they're being honest about it being 'perceived', which basically gives them carte blanch to do whatever they wish. Over here, most of the divides it seems are based on how 'each side' views a reality that they think is immutable and unquestionable.

I really do try sometimes to get beyond mere caricatures of those who think differently to myself. But sometimes I simply have to recoil in horror when some speak for themselves, as they "see it."

Until we are adult enough to recognise the fundamental difference between "telling it like it is" and "telling it as we see it" we shall remain children.

Just read this in Philip Goff's book, "Galileo's Error" and thought of the above....

"We are living in an increasingly polarized age in which people run away from uncertainty by bolstering their convictions to the point where no alternative is given the slightest credibility. This kind of obstinacy is simply incompatible with the realization that even our most basic beliefs, such as the belief that that there is an external world or that the universe has existed for more than five minutes, are not known with 100 percent certainty. One of the many values of a philosophical education is that it teaches the importance of doubt."

Censorship doesn't necessarily have to be instituted by a dictator or fascism with one state owned media outlet. It can be achieved through the complicity of private companies or possibly through threats. Prior to the rise in popularity of the internet and advancements in cable TV there were only three US broadcasting companies. They were CBS, NBC and ABC. All their news was the product of the Associated Press (AP). The news shows were pretty much the same. Getting real deep down news fell on certain news papers like the New York Times. Although I disagree with his socialist politics, " Manufacturing Consent by Noam Chomsky is well worth the watch (2hrs 45min). These things happen even in the press of today. See this Blog Post about a similar news blackout.
