For those of us on the top of the world, Spring is here!
And for many of us, that means Gardening of one sort or another.

I just got my praying mantis eggs today!
Maybe this year my verbena won't look like a bunch of dead twigs.

And I'm hoping they's get to the Japanese beetles too, to save the roses.

I do veggies too - more on that later.

Do you grow anything?

Smorgasbord for Birds ... aka tilled the garden.

Two years ago: aging (falling apart) home-maid raised-bed garden
Last year: abandoned
This year: rebirth for purchased raised-bed garden kits

Still way too wet to set up and plant, and rain forecast for overnight.

Starting from seed failed miserably. On-line purchased are sitting in the little pop-up greenhouse.

Eventually

Been plugging in plants as weather / time permits.
Tomatoes, cuke, Green peppers, chives, green onions, egg plant in the raised bed garden
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme, (required order) basil, cilantro, oregano and some "heritage" tomatoes from seed in patio pots. (3rd try was a charm)
Lettuce and radishes in the elevated bed today - figured with cloudy and rain for the next few days, wouldn't be a shock to move out of the greenhouse.

Apricot tree...just harvested the fruit.

Various herbs... taking a beating from pests.

Grapes... just turned from flowers to tiny grapes. In a few months it will be a battle of timing us vs the opossum vs the raccoon vs the skunk... timing is everything... to0 early and they don't taste right, too late and they have been eaten. Last year the opossum won. Two years before the skunk won. The middle year was just a bad year for grapes... in our yard.

No veggies this year. I need a new set up to protect the roots from gophers and fruit from the above noted suspects.

A month or so ago the aphids were a threat. I hired some mercenaries in the form of lady bugs as they are voracious eaters of aphids at two stages of their life (adult and larvae). The mercenaries did their job well.

We usually have mantis around, but haven't see one this year.

Already picked some cukes, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, green beans, eggplant, green peppers, lettuce

Life Hack:
You know that tomatoes shouldn't be refrigerated.
But....
If you rinse the cherry tomatoes in warm water right before you eat them, you get the sensation of a wonderful chill when you bite into them!

It should still be winter here, but ladybugs, darkling beetles, and grasshoppers are out.

And interestingly enough, two different sets of red tail hawks seem to be going through cording behaviors.

I’m going to give gardening a try this year. Most likely a container because while we have land, it’s crap land. Well Not crap exactly, just high desert so it takes a littler more effort than some parts of the country. I do have creatures that cross my property that would think I’m setting up a buffet.
I need something I grow without killing. So I was thinking of starting with baby greens. Since I can do that relatively soon indoors.

I love tomatoes, but realize it’s not a good starter plant for some with my serial plant killer history. My mentor wants me to try lasagna gardening, so if I do branch outside that will be a option. I’m going out of town later in the week, so I’ll plant my greens when I get back. I ran out of time this weekend to pick up supplies, and I know you can tent the seeds but I feel weird planting and abandoning...like the start of a bad habit.
