It’s not about his wife. It’s about maintaining basic professional and legal standards.

He can do whatever he wants in his personal time. But if you have to have your wife in a job situation, you are unprofessional and probably are not capable for having the job.

Government is his job, and when he is in the role of the Vice President, or even the governor previously, it matters.

I’d say the reverse if it was a woman wanting her husband around.

Discrimination by sex is illegal.

I tend to agree.

Imagine the male CEO of a large company refusing to have a business lunch with the female CEO of another large company that they have a really big deal with, specifically because she is a woman. I understand him thinking it inappropriate if it was personal...but business lunches are a thing. A real, actual part of the business world.

That being said, I'm not sure if there is ever a situation when a politician would have to have lunch or meet totally alone with another political figure by themselves. I have very limited knowledge of how that works though, so maybe.

To your point, I think if there are situations like that...suck it up buttercup. Do your damn job.

Yup, my job doesn’t do a lot of business lunches. I’ve had probably two official in twenty years that were one on one, but they were both with men because they happened to be filling the position that needed to be there. I’ve also had several group meals.
That doesn’t count taking lunch with a coworker because I like them or we both eat together or no one eats that day. (Meetings scheduled during lunchtime)

I know elected officials do a lot of negotiating and putting out feelers on how others feel about a topic before a vote that is “behind closed doors”. An not so much on the public transcripts (news and sessions on the floor)

I don’t know if involved meals or just meetings and how Pence works (or how he worked in Indy, except that even some conservative family from there don’t like him).

So he could find a way to deal with his issues, but it’s still a concern to me.

Just as a matter of thought. So the goverment now has a right to force me to break one of my Religious beliefs for EEOC compliance?

Ahhh. Good catch. I missed how I would address that.

The way I would accomdate someone with those religious beliefs is that for work purposes they need treatment to be equal. So if they can’t meet with a single woman alone, they can’t meet with a single man alone. This may mean the person needs an assistant to do their job. Some companies can make that accommodation in a reasonable way if the position already has assistants. Kind of depends on the job, but not everyone is suited for every job. Like I could not do your job in the military, I also can’t do Leon’s job even though we are both in the same general field. Making a place do the accommodations for me to do Leon’s work would be unreasonable.

So if Pence said he doesn’t eat meals alone with anyone other than his wife, I’d think he was quirky, but not discriminatory. So I wouldn’t think it was something that was a problem.

Well, that kind of thing might hurt him in the primaries, but only if another, more confrontational candidate gets traction. Otherwise, it will help him in the general election.

Okay, so I’m going to have to disagree with her on this one. Kamala implies that Pence is not doing so because of his views on women in general. Pence has gone on record saying he won’t meet 1 on 1 with women out of loyalty to his wife.

I don’t see any problem with Pence’s reasons here. He didn’t say he doesn’t meet with women at all, just not in 1 on 1 situations. And, in fact, while may be a tad bit on the unnecessary side, I do see it as quite honorable.

Your thoughts?

Personally I think either he, or his wife, or both, doen't trust Pence to conduct himself appropriately in one on one meetings, in which case I'd have to wonder why that would be the case, or if it is as he claims, that it's for religious reasons, and if they're interfering with his job, then maybe he should have a different job. It makes no sense to hire a butcher who's religious beliefs precludes him from handling animal meat. This is the same principle. If your religious beliefs preclude you as a politician from one on one meetings then either find a new job, or work out a solution. Conflicting religious belief is not a reason to not do your job.

In my profession (teaching of minors), it is best practice to never be in with a student alone in a room. This is not because the teacher (me) is prone to misconduct with that student or that things could easily slip into that. It is purely for safety and legal reasons - even if nothing ever would happen. There never can be misconceptions or false accusations with other witnesses in the room with us.

I am an itinerant teacher (meaning, I pull students out of their classes to work with them). Sometimes they are in groups, but sometimes, especially in absences, the result ends up being 1 on 1. It does not mean that if the situation results in this, that student does not get serviced. It just means that accommodations need to be arranged so that student still gets serviced in a way that we don’t violate the practice of not being alone in the room with that student. Usually that means an aide would join us or we would do it outside where others are present, etc.

I think the difference in opinion here between those that agree and disagree with Kamala is that when Pence says he won’t dine alone with another woman, the Kamala supporters automatically read this as = Pence not doing his job, whereas I, based on my experience above, do not necessarily see it as equal that. It just means that, when he needs to do his job, and his job requires he meet with a woman, then a little bit extra is needed to make it happen is all.

Pence probably indeed has a subordinate join him on all these meetings or just does it in a more open area. Heck, maybe the security detail that is around him all the time already satisfies him in this regard. After all, we are talking about a quote made 16 years ago.

I'm probably a broken record...but in your situation the sex/gender of the student or teacher does not play a role in the rules. There for it is ok. My dr office has a policy to call in a second person in the room if they are going to touch me other than basic vital signs. That's cool too, they treat everyone the same.

discrimination in one area, does tend to bleed into others even when they are trying not to let it.

and yeah, the security detail may be good enough, as long as a man doesnt get a private meeting with him that he would deny a woman, it's not an issue that impacts the job.
