I attended school in the 1970's and 1980's in the UK and used to do a lot of my PE lessons at school barefoot, including all indoor lessons from about the age of 8 to 16. Did anyone else have similar experiences to me?

No, but I do remember having to wear “uniforms” which were basically nothing but some cheaply mass produced t-shirts with a school logo on them and one of those skimpy shorts that were popular in sports in the early 80’s (think Bruce Jenner in his decathalon days).

But after a surprise come-from-behind depantsing in front of the entire school body, I resorted to sweat pants to cover that s*** up afterwards. Which was at least allowed unless we all wanted to freeze our balls in the winter. Besides, I wasn’t about to give everyone a second view of my said balls while we were seated on the asphalt for roll call.

I also remember coming to my PE locker one day to find what was once that t-shirt expertly threaded (and shredded in the process) through the basket hole and locker door vent and left hanging out for everyone else to add in an extra yank or two during the day before I had a chance to get to it, not to mention give me a non-suit grade for the day.

Junior High PE. Good times.

in 70's, when both jr. high school and high school, we had to wear school color t-shirts and shorts.

in gymnasium, in p.e. ocassionally, playing in socks on the floor, but never in bare feet.

Wouldn't that have been dangerous, to be moving round the gym in just socks?

No... I'm pretty sure that wasn't allowed in the USA.

But by high school I didn't do PE... varsity sports exemption... and footware was required for football (both Armenian football and football as known in the rest of the world; soccer).

in my schools, they didn't let us wear regular shoes in the gym. most of the time, we had a locker that switches our shoes. sometimes, the gym teacher especially when it was raining. we played games in our socks. we took off our shoes to play. our regular shoes would buff up the floor, that they didn't like.

no, it wouldn't be dangerous, you run into a wall or a bleacher with shoes on. with socks, it was fun, to slide the floor, like you were surfing or sking.
