Something tells me we’re no longer going to get any more military members to receive the mantle of Sec of Defense.
There are still a few flag officers out there that would take the job. Whether or not they are as
good or
qualified as Mattis is the question.
We've had numerous Sec Def's who were civilians. Granted most had at least some level of military service in their lives, typically when they were young.
Ultimately Trump won't care either way. He wants a
yes man and there are plenty of those out there. Some probably believe they can work with Trump to get him to do the
right thing. Some don't care and will only want the title. Some probably love him and think he is making America great again (think Flynn).
For whatever reason Trump is being very erratic and (seemingly) irrational on a variety of issues. If he
wins (or appears to win) this government shut down thing, he will go into the last two years of his administration in a fairly strong position. If not... he could well be a
lame duck for these next two years.
In either case, it is likely Trump will appoint one or more supreme court justices, which was the goal of the Republican party all along. He will be able to claim
success and will continue to claim to be the greatest president ever.
Now... if the economy tanks (and many are starting to think it will), his presidency will end pretty poorly. Of course he will blame Democrats (and probably Republicans as well...
its always someone else's fault).
