I’m pretty sure it is guitar picking.

Comes from pajuela... little wooden match or toothpick...

Pajuelear might be a made up verb from pajuela, so pajueleando would be the action of picking... as in playing a guitar.

There are also “dirty” meanings... I think.

So the translation of:

Sentíamos las balas pajueleándonos los talones, como si hubiéramos caído sobre un enjambre de chapulines.

would become

We felt the bullets picking our heels, as if we had fallen on a swarm of grasshoppers.

1st see my post... I made an edit.

I think an english translation might be: We felt the bullets nipping at our heels, as if we had fallen on a swarm of grasshoppers.

Slang never works with a straight translation. The word, depending on latin American country, can be used for "b****y" (like she is b****y and always nitpicking at me), or... well there are various other uses including sexual ones.

Sorry for answering in english... Mi español es débil esta mañana.

So,

pajueleándonos los talones

might become

nitpicking at hour heals or b****ing at our heals

I found the line in Llano en Llamas by Juan Rulfo. He calls one of the characters, La Perra, so probably he would not object to the translation, b****ing. It fits.

Sorry to be so long in answering this. I've been busy with school and work.

You can study Spanish on-line.

The two whitch I have used are:

babbel.com

and

rosettastone.com

Both are relatively inexpensive. I have been spending about an hour a day practicing the babbel grammar and vocabulary exercises.

Textbooks, which I suppose also includes Spanish for Dummies, have their use, but they don't speak.

To learn to speak, we need to hear the sound, so you need a teacher of some kind. Nice thing about using a computer is that it never gets tired.
