This past November, I undertook to write 50,000 words in the National Novel Writing Month contest. Every writer that completes and has verified the minimal word count is a winner. I did win, I am proud to say. I produced a rough draft to a novel, which I still am revising. For the under-achieving writer, I cannot recommend the contest highly enough. Before NaNoWriMo, I managed to produce about a paragraph per day. Now I am able to write over 50,000 words in thirty days. And, the quality of the writing is about the same.

Congratulations on the achievement. I am slowly getting back to Poetry (again). Hopefully this time I will stick to it.

A paragraph a day seems like good to me, if you write a few hundred words.

Well, Henry Miller once wrote that by writing a few lines per day it is possible to write the biggest book imaginable. In my case, one paragraph is not enough, because I second guess everything I write several times, which costs me progress and does not always result in better writing.

In the past, I self published, under a different name. But I suck at self promotion. So, now, I am shooting for a book an agent will want to see. THe contest I wrote of may see to it that I get it done while I still am young enough to produce a few more.

I use the NaNoWriMo forum during November for inspiration and mutual support. But I write with pen and paper, so my writings aren't uploaded to the site.
Churning out 50k while thousands of of people do the same is a terrific way to get an idea on paper to see how it might work or not.
