Banks and all are closed Monday, so it has the long weekend feel to it. Many treat it it that way.

The reason was to recognize persons lost in military action and former military. Some that don't come from a military family can use it to just generally recognized the passing of all friends and family.

Like any holiday, it's gotten commercialized, and such, that it's just time off. Which time off can still be good, sometimes they are the best family times.

We do have Remembrance Day in November. This is simply a day to remember fallen soldiers and poppy's are sold to raise money for charities supporting soldiers and families. (Not 100% sure all the profits actually get there after numerous companies take their split though, sadly)
It is pretty much full of church services and speeches from veterans, rather than being commercialised though.
which i'm glad of, as most if not all other holidays have been commercialised here also, as you've said.

We love our bank holidays though and if it wasn't for having them we'd of probably stole remembrance day to in all honesty

Do you guys not have bank holidays then?

Nope. No bank holidays. I mean things are closed but always for another reason. New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day (Remembrance Day), Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Though I think I may have forgot one or two. Some are optional for schools and my school stays open.

We're keeping it low key. I'm going to make up a nice big pot of soup and we'll probably have some red wine and just kick back. Simple, but we like it.

My weekend is coming to a close. Had to do something else in place of my original Saturday Plans.

You guys are robbed of the most blessed holiday of all.
Bank holidays = free days off or time and half if you do work, family time, community's setting up fun family days or a simple good old day at the pub.
All guilt free without having to buy presents or praying or donating to anyone.

They'd be riots if they took ours away

Yeah, we make the most of them and spend them in the pub.

I tend to spend bank holidays with the grandkids and family.
Before they came along after the kids were grown they pretty much just a good excuse for a lay in.
