Are you all insane? Operation Ivy is the best Ska band but much much respect must be given to Desmond Dekker!!! Without him Ska as we know it would not be around. Less Than Jake is great, Reel Big Fish, Skankin Pickle or anything Mike Park does...but Operation Ivy paved the road we all Skank on!!!! Check out Jesse Michaels new band Classics of love and other bands like Common Rider, you will love it. Cheers everyone.

Hi all I thought Id join and have a chat with fellow ska pepes. I reckon that it is defo a choice between The Specials and The Clash both very instrumental in the 70 80s, but if it went on record sales it would most certainly be Madness.

Have to agree with QBoy!....best Ska bands are:
The Specials, with tracks like Too Hot, Ghost Town, too much too young and A message to you rudi, Gangsters

The Beat, Mirror in the bathroom,Ranking full stop

The Selector, Too much preasure, 3 minute hero, On my radio

Followed by bands like Madness (eary stuff though) and bad manners!

If your into your Ska and never heard these bands check em out, oryour not a proper Rude Boy! ....enjoy!

Did anyone say the Wailers? Bob Marley was playing Ska before Reggae was born. Simmer Down is a great example of classic SKA.

In the 80s I loved Fishbone they weren't exclusive to the genre as a whole they are Ska/funk/metal/punk but, "Ugly, and Lyin a** b**** are good examples of 80s ska that gave birth to what the 90s bands were playing. The first Ska I heard in the 80s were a band called the Uptones; it's had to get hands on good recordings from them.

In the 90s I like all the ones mentioned already, Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger (when they played SKA), also Under Cover SKA (they may span decades but I saw them in the 90s) and the Skeletons.

Oh - depends how you look at it....

So....old school would be Toots and the Maytals

80s would be Specials

Ska Punk would be Operation Ivy

...and the best Ska Party Band would be Reel Big Fish methinks

@shylyescence Said

the first ska song i heard was 'life of the party' by the planet smashers, and so for that life changing experience i would have to say them!

i do like this (now broken up) band called ask my cat, not famous but still pretty cool because the singer was a girl and so it was just a little different!

I remember 'Ask My Cat' - I think we played with them once, and I think I bought a CD <goes off to rummage in boxes>
