The full BBC coverage is being shown on BBC Parliament today, anyone else watching it? It's absolutely fascinating.

I'm too young to remember the 92 election so seeing it all unfold in real time is really interesting, something I've read and heard so much about is actually unfolding on screen.

I did wonder why Twitter was stuck in a timewarp today.

Alex Salmond is getting a lot of coverage, it's really interesting how pretty much his entire argument is the same 20 years later.

I guess he'd say that his argument has always been fundamentally sound, so it doesn't need to change. The issues are the same, and the desired outcome is the same.... why should argument, at its basic level vary..?

Because the context is different. In politics a week is a long time, so it makes sense that politicians try and be as relevant as possible in their ideas.

The debate and political climate has changed so much. The argument made more sense in 1992 than 2012 imo, in 2012 Alex Salmond is First Minister if the Scottish Parliament, not leader of a tiny minority party trying to blame everything on the Tories.

Charles Kennedy (Chancellor of my University incidentally) is on TV. Looking charming as ever.

I agree the political climate has changed, and it is undoubtedly true that the existence of a Scottish Parliament is something that was not in existence in 1992, but the basic case... for an independent Scotland..... is exactly the same, and the reasons for wanting it are fundamentally no different now than they were then.

Glad to hear Charles Kennedy is looking well. Quite how serious his drinking problems were is anybody's guess. His career suffered after Paxman made his comments and started a bandwagon against him. Glad if all that is behind him now.

He wasn't talking about independence, he was talking about the Labour party.

Are you enjoying the BBC series White Heat, Geoff..?

The fourth episode was centred on 1979 and Thatcher's election victory. Being the political person you are, I would have thought you'd enjoy that.

I wondered if the title "White Heat" might have had something to do with Harold Wilson's comment about the "White heat of the technological revolution" from the 1960's, but I haven't found anything to back that up.
