Tonight the Edinburgh University student elections took place and all positions went to people affiliated with UK Uncut (an extremist left-wing group who are opposed to all cuts in any sense to anything to do with education or anything else).

Two weeks ago the Glasgow SRC elections took place, and every single place went to people affiliated with UK Uncut.

Apparently a few other universities have had the same trend and it has been the case for the last couple of years. Has anyone else noticed this or got an explanation for it? How are the extremist lefties so good at mobilising their support?

Considering the Government withdrew all of our funding at my uni, I'm not surprised that the SU candidates were lefties. Infact even for a place that specialises in philosophy, it seems a bit taboo for people to talk about being in favour of the Tories.

I find the extreme lefties just as annoying as the right folk to be honest, wouldn't mind so much if they'd just shoosh every now and then and not make every thing into a huge fight.

I think they're generally more popular due to Twitter and Facebook. That's where UKUncut came from and it seemed to blow up from there really. I think the fact that it's not an official group helps a lot, adds to the protesty rebellious vibe I guess.

Its a bit like the London Mayor election. Ken Livingstone is promising people "free money" but not really coming up with where the money is coming from. Just saying, they can claw back funds from another budget somewhere else.

The thing is people are becoming so stupid they are voting for whoever makes the best promises rather than asking how these promises can be actually put into action.

People will vote for whatever affects them the most.

Very interesting stuff in the NHS right now where we are asking the public what they want and they are coming up with whatever affects them directly. They seem to have no comprehension that taking the money to give them whatever surgery or drugs they personally want means that somewhere else someone will have to have their health care cut as a result.

We have become quite introspective (if that is the correct word)

My sister met him and was full of it. Didn't once think to question anything he said...

But then, isn't that what politics is largely about? Telling the people what they want to hear whenever possible?

It shouldn't be, it should be about real solutions.

Are UK Uncut merely pandering to students/fees, or offering any solutions?

I do not really know. I am assuming they are promising things that cannot be carried through because to promise no cuts whatsoever during recession is dumb. Its better to be brutally honest but does not win votes.

They were formed mainly to put pressure on companies like the guy who owns Topshop, Vodafone et al and make them pay their corporation tax. Then it's gradually got more and more general as it's gone on really. They tried to do something at U2's headline performance at Glasto in protest of the band not paying enough tax and it failed miserably

The thing that slightly concerns me is most of the people who I've met who are affiliated with these groups are so left wing it just seems unrealistic. Sort of reminds me of me when I was 15, read the communist manifesto and thought I knew how to sort out the world.

I worry slightly. I don't know how the left wing groups have got so good at garnering support because I don't think the majority of people at either university are particularly extremist left wing, I think most are fairly normal in their views or simply apathetic. I wonder if there is a way to get those people more interested in student politics.

Right wing is a joke. The problem is the left wing has always been a bigger one.
