Hands down, any band that writes sad songs would have to be a Country and Western band.
Most songs are about the Truck dying, the Crops are Dyin, their wife has left them or their Dog died without Barkin Goodbye.
All very sad and moanfull stuff................I don't think

One of the saddest songs I've heard in a while...by a guy who doesn't usually write sad songs.

Lucinda Williams has got to be close to the top.

I love her music, but if you listen to too much the thought of slashing your own wrists starts to surface.

A band called The Antlers. They have a concept album called 'Hospice' about when the guy's wife was dying in a hospital. Great album, sad though.

That is definitely one of the most depressing albums I've ever listened to. I can't listen to it much as it just brings my mood down, glad their latest album is a bit chirpier.

Morrissey has written some incredibly sad songs about isolation, suicide, alienation, self-loathing, etc. Brilliant stuff though.

Leonard Cohen has also written some gloomy stuff.
