Luis Suarez created a media frenzy by refusing to shake the hand of Manchester United full back Patrice Evra before the match between United and Liverpool last Saturday, as is now the custom in English football.
Evra had cited Suarez for racial abuse in a previous match between the two teams, for which Suarez was found guilty and banned for 8 matches.
The handshake situation was, in my opinion, blown out of all proportion by the Sky TV coverage of the game, leading to a media feeding frenzy which spiralled almost out of control until Suarez issued an apology for his behaviour on Sunday... probably after having his arm twisted by his employers, but that's just my speculation.
The situation even got so silly that, on Sunday afternoon before the match between Aston Villa and Manchester City, the Sky cameras covering the match focused in on the nine year old mascot of Aston Villa failing to shake the hand of his ten year old Manchester City counterpart before their match.... probably tongue in cheek, but this incident made it into several national newspapers on Monday just the same.
