I have been ripped off but that was because a hacker somehow got my bank account information and I think it was from an AOL Greeting card scam a few years back - right around the time those scams were becoming very big but still not as widely publicized as they are now. Today I know better than to ever key my password into an email like that...that was my one and only time ever doing it and i think when I did key in that password, and AOL having my credit card info all stored for the direct debit, they were able to get me. Drained me of checking and savings since my debit card would pull from savings to prevent overdrafts. I got every dime of it back even before waiting for the bank to do it via my fraud report. I saw the charges come out very quickly after it happened and I picked up the phone and called every company they went on their shopping spree with, explained it was unauthorized, and the shipment was stopped.
I have not had this happen with any shopping sites (knock on wood) because I pay for most online purchases with paypal or shop at online companies that have a reputable brick and mortar counterpart (i.e JC Penney, Best Buy, etc).
They tend to have very rigid fraud prevention processes in place for their online ordering systems.
