Well, being in my late 30's and 'retired' from the scene I tend to stick with the stuff I liked when I was first turned on to the genre.Plus when i was in my 20's...DK of course, the clash, Crass, Subhumans, GBH, Circle Jerks, black flag, rancid (pre-commercial) Fugazi, NOFX, the early pogues (Ireland), Stiff little finger (Scotland), the gits, ramones. I have a hard time keeping track of my tapes though. I have a 10 yr old daughter that keeps 'borrowing' them. So every few days I have to 'clean her room' . I finally let her keep my original Sex Pistols cassette from when I was in the 5th grade (1979-80) See, told ya i was old, lol

SUBHUMANS!!! hell yeah!!! GBH, BLACK FLAG, RAMONES oh you are the savior on this thread!! lol

You might as well ask what my favorite finger is.
I wouldn't be the same without any of them.

Pure Punk (if there ever was such a thing)

DK
Circle Jerks
Dead Milkmen
Sex Pistols
Green Day (1039/Smooth, Kerplunk, the first half of Dookie)

Punk Subgenres, New Punk, Ska etc
Op Ivy
NOFX
Bosstones
Sublime
Lagwagon
MFGG

We Once Thought We Were Punks for Listening to Them

Ramones
The Cure (Mostly what you hear on "Standing on the Beach: The Singles)
Talking Heads
Bowie
Violent Femmes
Billy Idol

If They Want to Call Themselves Punks That's Their Right

Green Day (2nd half of Dookie onward)
Blink 182 (a track or two)
Sum 41 (a track or two)
Weezer

A Note About Green Day "Selling Out"

I've looked before, and can't find the exact quote, but Billie Joe summed it up something like this back in '94:

"For anyone calling us sellouts; As a teen I picked up a guitar for the same reasons everyone else did, to get laid, and to get paid, and now that I am you want to give me s***?"
I thought that was a pretty "punk" statement.

Also being on the other side of forty (ignore my profile, it's bunk) I think their song Burnout also answers it well.

Finally

Now that I've hopefully explained what I think the difference between "punk" and punk rock.

IMHO the "punkest" song of all time:

punk rock is really the best music to grow up to....

from hanging out at an amusement park, getting drunk for the 1st time, falling in love, riding bmx with friends, just bumming around......

sum 41, nofx, street dogs, the ramones, alkaline trio- some of my faves.

nowadays i dont get time to listen to music except whats on the radio(lame)
but when i get a chance, those are the bands that i love
