What exactly makes someone a "Prep"?

Everyone always says things like, "She is so preppy." But how do you classify a prep?

personaly

Perfume
and
Making life hell for "emo" and "goth" people

Well, stereo types are pretty stupid, but in general what I think most people mean by Prep is exactly what radpotato said.

answer these questions:

are you on the cheerleading squad?

is %90 of your wardrobe abercrombie/american eagle/old navy/express?

does it take more than 15 minutes to do your hair in the morning?

are you friends with the elite/rich/snobby girls in your class?

have you dated an athlete?

well, if you answered yes to 3 1/2 or more of these questions, you might be considered a prep by the other girls.....

It's not a bad thing, unless you spend a lot of your time making fun and putting down the others around you.

See, now I was considered a prep in HS because I liked clothes from Nordstrom, played sports but there was no such thing as Emo or Goth back in the early 90's, and American Eagle/Abercrombie weren't even mainstream. I tried to be friends with all of the different cliques because not everyone you grow up with chooses the same cliques in high school. Just because you dress one way and enjoy athletic competition doesn't mean you're destined to talk to only one crowd. If you believe that then you're selling yourself short. Oh and for radical up there, just because someone is considered a prep because they dress nice and play sports doesn't mean they're rich.

That's one of the few stereotypes that we don't really have that much in the UK, not half as much as it seems in the US anyway.

i wud classify a prep as someone who thinks there better then everyone and someone who is good in sport, has money, has the hottest girlfriend/boyfriend and doesnt talk to anyone below them

I hate how people stereotype cheerleaders to be blonde,dumb, preppy, & high-maintanence. I am a cheerleader who makes good grades & redheaded.

My view of being a prep is very simple
For guys: Plaid shorts with a polo. Collar flipped up and everything. They actually care about their appearence. They're clean cut, and usually play soccer.

For girls: Plaid shorts with a polo (aha), or Abercrombie shirts/tanks/hoodies. Small jeans. Never leaves the house without makeup. Always has their nails done, etc.

You get the drift.
