Right or wrong?

Is it right to use what knowledge you have of people to convince them of something that isnt true? I did this with my friends, they were consistently asking who I liked, I managed to trick them into thinking that I liked somebody else by giving them slight hints in the wrong directions and never saying they were straying from the right path. I cant really explain very well what I did, I just used my knowledge of what they were like, what to say, how to say it to them and then said it.
