i can compare it with a P3 running a customized edition of vector linux with more apps having the same and more functions.
the macintelatoshes are merely pcs with customized OSs.

Here and there,

The Macbook Pros are great laptop PC's. They are very pretty PC's that run Mac OS X and Windows XP.

There are no Macbook Pros with 14" screens as you say you have, so I assume you have the 15.4" version. The standard Macbook, at 13.3", makes a better portable PC IMO, though the larger screens make them more suitable (barely) as desktop replacements. I wouldn't want to do all my computing on a 15" screen. The ones with the 17" screen are a bit more tolerable, but at $2800 they're a bit.. overpriced as a desktop replacement.

Comparing a 2GHz Core Duo with a P3 running Linux with, presumably, Gnome or KDE? What a nightmare.

you kidding. slackware with blackbox runs very fast, is stable and is efficient and responsive on a p3.
running it on a 2ghz dual core won't change anything.

note: gnome and kde are too heavy. i use blackbox.
