What are your opinions on it?

Persionally, I'm 100% against it. I don't feel that the color of someones skin, or their heritage should get them a job that they are not as qualified for as their white competetors. Itsnt that essentially racism?

Sex, Race, Nationality, Religon... None of those factors should have anything to do with getting a job.

I agree..
I hate the form you have to fill in where it aks you for your sex race and natinality, when you are filling out a job application form.

Yeah I'd pretty much agree. What's with ignoring the obvious racism towards caucasions? Nobody really seems to care, not that I really do, just when the issue arises...

You have to understand where affirmative action came from.

All across the US, this very day, blacks are discriminated against in favor of lesser-qualified whites for jobs. Every day. They are passed over for promotions in favor of less-qualified whites.

People are racist in the US. This is something many people are fighting very desperately against through education and other means.. but they're there. A *lot* of white people are very biased against blacks, whether they admit it or not.

Affirmative action was intended to combat this by leveling out the playing field. It has a lot of flaws, and feels very wrong on a purely moral issue. What's really wrong is that we have been forced to resort to such a ridiculous solution to people's biases.

I do understand that. But getting a job or getting into college should be based on ability only. If a black person is better than me at a job or more qualified he should get it. If not then I should get it. Sadly we will never be able to completely get above looking at race and color.

The difference is that racism towards whites, while it obviously exists, doesn't affect the potential or quality of life for said whites all that much. It's a nuisance.

Compared to the ongoing discrimination and racism towards blacks, discrimination towards whites isn't even a blip on the radar.

Racism in general is awful, no matter who is being discriminated against.. but implying that these issues are equally important is foolishness.

Of course it should be. Of course he should get the job.

However it doesn't work that way. There are tons and tons and tons of managers out there who will decide to hire or promote the white guy even though the black guy is a better candidate. It really sucks. It really really shouldn't have to be that way. But it is.

I was watching the show Boston Public today and the episode was on this very topic. I personally don't agree with affirmative action. The person, based on their abilities should be able to get the job, the scholarship, the whatever, not because of the colour of their skin. It's unfair to both parties.
