I was lamenting the other day about how I don't have Publisher 2003 on my laptop, even though it can handle it. My friend told me he had it on his computer, but he lost the setup disk. So he told me he'd do a search on his HD and find the install.exe file and send it to me.
The questions I have are first--is this even legal? Second, is it even possible? And third--if the answer to the above 2 are 'yes,' why isn't everyone doing this?

it MAY be possible to copy the entire folder that the program is intalled in and have the program run properly...
i.e: C:/Program Files/Publisher/
that won't be right...just as an example.

but...there won't be an install.exe on his HD. Unless he purposely put it there.

probably your best bet is to buy it lol.

o and no it's probably(edit: make that definitely) not legal.

Thought so. And wouldn't Microsoft crack down on our asses and destroy our PCs if they found it was pirated software? Which I'm not sure how they do, but it's still freaky ...

A kid at my school is making a boatload for having a pirating forum site, if you wanted to find it you would find it there. Unfortunately he doesn't trust me with the URL and I think it costs money to access the forums.

That's ok. I don't want to get pirated stuff, which is why I posted this thread to assure myself of what I already assumed.
But I appreciate the thought. If only everyone thought like Linux people.... *sighs* That's, like, eutopian or something.
I'll just buy legal cheap software on ebay 'til then.

actually alot of programs do make a copy of the install.exe file in the programs folder so it might be possible to do it that way but it is illegal but the chances of getting caught doing it is almost nill i would say most people who have computers have at least one illegal program on it

He did actually sent me the app.exe. It had the right icon and everything, but all the Publisher files I'd done on other computers' icons were still weird. So I didn't even try to open it...

i don't mind making copies, download stuff and sniffing network transmission.
i just believe that in order for me to attain my objectives and reach my full potential, i should do stuff that helps me advance even if it involves piracy.

well said...

you can be a genius and never know it because you don't have the tools you need just because you can't afford them.

i all software should be open source, that way everyone can reach their full potential and software will evolve faster and productivity as well as new inventions will rise.

OpenOffice is a good, free, open-source alternative

but open source needs guidelines esp. in stages of developments. take ananconda rpm installer for example - it's a mess and i'm lost in the codes. i'm still new i admit it. but if there had been some good documentation, i've understood it.

and i'm not saying that because i'm a fan of ms. i'm a fan of no company or os. i use whatever is required to do a task or whatever is required for me to learn more.

open source has lots of advantages but the disadvantages disappoints me.

but right now, illegality which i do not consider as illegality is the best thing on the web and in the computing world.

yep, open office is the best office suite out there....it's better then MS Office and anyone can afford it...

I don't understand why schools don't use OpenSource software...just imagine what they could do with all the money they would save...

btw, did you @ least try msoffice2007 beta2?
it's worth trying. it's great! esp. since doc is now docx and fully xml compatible. word has metro tech. integrated (save in pdf for e.g)

I know i'm still learning and i'm no guru in computer science but i like ms. approach. i also like open source but the approach is not correct from my point of view.

I want to see open source projects have a good design report, with use/test cases, documentation and flowcharting instead of simply releasing the code. there is a need for standards but this goes against the open source philosophy. how can i or any other programmer manage and be efficient with just a source code with some annotations and a plain documentation which is not useful. i have been disappointed at firefox codes as well as anaconda.
i hope i did not offend any opensource fan or supporter.
