Live vs. Studio

In general, which do you prefer?

I prefer live albums over studio recorded ones. Anyone can sound good in a studio after several edits, but when things are recorded live, that shows their true talent and skill.

I'm currently listening to Vertical Horizon's album Live Stages and that's where the idea for this thread came from

I love John Mayer's live stuff too. Any Given Thursday is an awesome album.

I try to appreciate all aspects of music. I love hearing solos whether they're on guitar, bass, piano/keyboard, or drums. I think it adds a nice touch to the song.

Although the screaming can get a little annoying, it usually dies down during the actual song. When you hear the screams, it makes you feel like you're at the concert or gig they're performing at. I like that.

It depends. I've heard some truly sucky live songs . . . and I hate hearing the screaming & clapping going on during them. It annoys me.

Studio albums are generally better than live albums. It is awesome to see bands live though.

I enjoy studio too, but like, I dunno. If an artist is good live, then I prefer their live stuff over studio recorded. If the artist is only good when they get edits and stuff, then I won't even bother listening to their live stuff after one time

One problem is that some of the songs we all go nuts over have loads of hidden extras...put in by the wonders of Studio. Saying that music when live gives off a certain extra kick

I really prefer a raw sound, not that there arent some awesome producers out there. At one point i was convinced William Orbit was GOD!

But just from childhood memories, listening to live music is very theraputic for me. Especially when you get the unscheduled jam or the occasional f*** up, and they laugh. Its where you hear the love between the musician and his instrument (no smutty innuendo intended)

I love when musicians pour their hearts and souls out on their instrument. It's what I enjoy most about live music. The solos, the improvisation, it's just different.

I think live albums can build them up to something there not, they could take parts from differnt shows and make it a super show (on cd) so when you go to see them live you have them built up to something there not

I totally 100 % agree with you. I judge an artist on their live abilities, if they can sing live well then I am a big fan...if not, I will no longer like them. I have much respect for those who can sing well live and none at all for those who can't...Ashlee Simpson comes to mind.

i prefer the studio album versions but i do love hearing live albums as well. i love the vibe and the atmosphere they create and i love being able to hear the artist in their own light without all the enhancers that they use when they go into the studio.

My fave live album that i have is Greenday - Bullet In A Bible and the amount of times i have listened to that is not even funny. Its so good

i dont know maybe because the concert on that is pretty much the same as the ones that i went to when they were in here in Sydney and maybe thats why i love it so much and it brings back heaps of memories, i dont know....but i love hearing them interact with the audiences as well.

Its just a completely different atmosphere with live albums.

Do you prefer album recorded music or live music? (I don't mean like in concert, because that is the obvious choice) I mean recorded live music. Some people would rather the variety of the live versions of musicians over the clean-cut album tracks.

I generally prefer album tracks, but some artists sound so awesome live. My favorite artist to listen to live is Ani DiFranco. I have an entire double disc set of her Living in Clip concert and it just rocks my world.

So what do you prefer? Live or album edited?
