So this website was a carryover from the MySpace forums. When MySpace started to shut down people are scrambling for an alternate. One of the main lures for me is that you can have a dissenting opinion and it cannot be downloaded into oblivion. Pure democracy is garbage. That said there are regulars who do nothing but offer personal attacks and gaslighting and this gets very old very fast. All of our major institutions have been politicized and for that reason you’re exactly right. We don’t agree on the same set of facts.

For an example of the polarization, we can compare the two party's view Presidents of Hoover and Roosevelt.

Democrats think Hoover didn't do enough to fix the economy, and Roosevelt saved the economy.

Republicans think Hoover made the economy worse, and Roosevelt did mostly the same as Hoover, but more of it.

I'm getting up there but I can't remember anything before President Ford.

Barry Goldwater, Bill Buckley, and Reagan were my first Republican experiences

Actually TFS predates MySpace, so was not a “carryover”…

I know… facts don’t matter, and by posting this fact I am a terrible person.

As a pre-Trump Republican (actually a Reagan era Republican), I don’t think that.

In fact, most educated Republican know that Hoover was at best mediocre, and that FDR was clearly one of the top 10 presidents in US history.

President W Bush is the first president I remember mostly because the next president was black. I remember thinking, "Wow, presidents can be black." It felt like a thunder clap like finding a derivative for the first time and actually understanding it.

Republicans like to compare Harding with Hoover and FDR: Harding, the do-nothing president, who presided over the shortest recession. Hoover and FDR, the do-everything presidents who presided over the longest recession.

You mean “depression” as in The Great Depression.

The longest “recession” was The Great Recession of 2007-2009.

There is actually a difference, believe it or not.

And yes, I know this post makes me a bad person.

And about the Legislative State

President “Biden announced that the Department of Labor is developing “an emergency rule” mandating all employers with more than 100 employees to require workers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or be subject to weekly testing before going to work. The requirement will impact more than 80 million employees in private sector businesses, officials said."

Of course it is only a rule, but in court that won't matter.

More about the Department of Labor and the Legislative State.

The last time I studied American history, maybe the second week, we took a test with the following question.

In Federalist 51, Publius argues that the system of separation of powers and checks and balances assumes that people in government will be _________
.
selfless
expert
corrupt
ambitious

The cynic in me wanted to say corrupt, but Madison actually said ambitious.

About half way through the course, we began to talk about the Progressives and their Legislative State. I think the Progressives disagreed with Madison. They want people in government to be experts.

And so we have 150 rule making agencies, bureaus, commissions, departments, etc, which make rules, which have the force of law. I say 150 because an historian told me 150, but he said that he doesn't know for sure.

So we have the department of labor, which will decide, or not, whether we all must be vaccinated.

Seems to me that the Republican view on this says that if indeed a decision must be made, the Congress should make it. They argue, and if I remember right so did Aristotle, that politicians have experience making decisions on a wide range of topics. Experts tend to know a lot about one thing.

With that in mind, one might wonder what the Department of Labor knows about disease, which makes it better prepared to decide.

If we look at the graphs of the death rates, the pandemic does seem to be going away by itself.

ALL PROBLEMS. All. Problems eventually aren't.

The question is always about cost and risk. At what cost and what risk do I as an individual or we as a society willing to factor in.

Joe Biden--- "It's not about freedom . . . ."

No go Joe. Dead on arrival thanks.

The mandatory-vaccination issue offers another example of how Republicans and Democrats see the world in wildly different ways.

By a wide margin (about 8 to 1), Republicans think mandatory vaccination is not constitutional.

By a smaller margin (about 3 to 5), Democrats think it is contitutional.

And independent voters oppose mandatory vaccination by about 3 to 1.

You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe.

You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

It's not a rabbit hole if you follow the red.

Yes.

"Red pill" >>> The willingness to learn a potentially unsettling or life-changing truth.

"Blue pill" >>> Remaining in contented ignorance.
