Any day now I should see my clan of Junco's return

They usually show up around Thanksgiving, and stay until about Easter.

It's about time!

I've been keeping my eye out for them, and thought I saw one a few days ago. But this morning it was confirmed, I saw at least four bopping around the retired garden and wood pile.

I could have missed them previously due to the lack of snow, they don't stand out as much.

I had heard that the wildfires from over the summer have affected migration patterns and timing for some animals. Though I think I'm far enough east for any real effect from them.

Funny - I was just thinking about this thread - I Did see the Junkos a few days ago - in the snow. But we're on a warming trend and that may have been the sighting of the season.

Is that your pic?

Yes... mine.😁

1st bee pic of the season. It’s about 1/2 the size of a honeybee.

Seems like the honeybees never went away this year. They’re cool, but rarely photo them. Carpenter bees have been out on our wisteria for about 2 weeks. I rarely photo them either... they move so much that usually I just watch them.

Well, speaking of tiny bees, if I may cross-pollinate from another board I'm on:

Fairyfly!

On a hike the other day, I chanced upon a native of California; the Southern Pacific Rattlesnake or the black diamond rattlesnake (Crotalus helleri).

"It is one of the largest rattlesnakes, is one of several dangerously venomous rattlesnakes species native to California. Their venom is highly toxic to humans and occasionally fatal; however, they strike humans only if cornered or threatened."

We did not give it a reason strike at us. 😎

Based on size (roughly 4’ long) and number of rattles, this one is between three to four years old.

Note on that snake

On line descriptions say it ranges 2 to 3 ft but can exceed 4.

I’m pretty confident this one was 4’... though I could be wrong.

Oh... and I know it isn't a plant nor in a garden, but it was near some plants... in 'god's garden'...

And from the garden… Psilocybin mushrooms…😳

Grown by random accident in our potted bamboo.

I thought they only grew under pine trees in cow s***?

Or in bamboo ... is it a pacific / Asian variety?

Apparently a somewhat "new" species....

"Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata is a psilocybin mushroom in the section Stuntzae, having psilocybin and/or psilocin as main active compounds. It is closely related to P. subaeruginascens from Java, P. septentrionalis from Japan, and P. wayanadensis from India. This mushroom was first documented by Richard V. Gaines in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in June 2003."

Apparently more recent research suggests that it has both psilocybin and psilocin as main active compounds.

PS
I confess to not actually testing out these mushrooms. After all, I am still on a tequila kick... for now...

I'm not sure if I saw the same one twice, or two different baby snakes in my garden over a two day period last week.
I moved the snake(s) to a safe place while I continued to work.

But I hate those little tiny ants that get into the pots on my patio
I just Sevin-dusted the s*** out of them the other day.

I don't mind them in the middle of my yard. But just keep your space!
