The link displays the main differences between the games we (Brits and Yanks) love. Although outwardly similar in appearance, there are a number of differences. It doesn't mean we can't enjoy both.

The NFL is attempting to widen the appeal of gridiron football. Several regular season NFL matches have taken place in England in recent years. They've been well attended but the game hasn't broken into the European market yet.

Why do you think that might be..?

Rugby has attempted to break into the American market with high profile matches such as the game at Soldier Field when Ireland became the first team to beat New Zealand in goodness knows how long.

Can both sports co-exist on both continents..? I think they can although fan loyalties are strong and it can be difficult for unfamiliar sports to gain a foothold in new territories.

Myself...? We get NFL matches screened live on Sky as part of our sport subscription package. I cheer for NY Jets although I know their chances of winning the superbowl are minimal.

Rugby Union is the sporting love of my life and NFL will never replace it. But I can still enjoy some gridiron in the Autumn and winter time when I'm also wrapped up in Netball, Football (soccer to you), rugby union and European winter sport.

Do you think you could learn to love rugby union too..?

i aware one football game in london annually event. i have see on st. louis rams played london, before i didn't much difference in the states or london. i think probably that americans doesn't money to travels to london, just see one game. americans will see 6 or more games in london, that worth the seasonal ticket or one flight there.

rugby need to broken down into four twenty period like football. i think rugby could have a good opportunities years ago in america. i don't think america ever really been expose by rugby. it is because nfl never recognized something americans would interest in watching.

I don’t know much about rugby to be honest, it looks like it would be fun to play, but I do think American football is more fun to watch as far as a spectator sport is concerned.

Speaking of which, it will be a strange year for the NFL this season, which starts this Thursday - with the pandemic erasing stadium crowds, no preseason practice games, and injuries and Covid-19 benching both sure to abound as a result. But, as always, the NFL never fails to play its season, no matter what the crisis, be it 9-11, weather, or this pandemic.

I’m predicting a New Orleans Saints vs. Houston Texans Super Bowl, with the Saints prevailing.

Teams to watch this season:

NFC Division Winners:

Philadelphia Eagles
New Orleans Saints
Minnesota Vikings
Seattle Seahawks

NFC Wild Card teams:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Detroit Lions

AFC division winners:

Buffalo Bills
Houston Texans
Baltimore Ravens
Kansas City Chiefs

AFC wild card teams:

New England Patriots
Tennessee Titans

You may be interested to know that USA has a national team -The Eagles - who have competed in (I think) all the Rugby World Cup competitions that have taken place since 1987.

They take a pretty good following around the world. The fans are very colourful and committed. They've got the hang of the social aspect (lots of beer, lots of food and a great deal of bad behaviour - but in a fun way).

Clearly the Eagles team can't compete with the major powers - The Southern Hemisphere big three (New Zealand, Australia & South Africa) or the Northern Hemisphere Six Nations countries (England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, France & Italy), but they sure give a good account of themselves and are very popular on the world circuit.

Eagles took part in the 7's competition at the last Olympics in Rio as well.

A number of American players now play professionally for club teams in Europe.

One thing though.... The game will never go to a four quarter 20 minute game. That's not going to happen.

i normally don't watch sports for, at least, 10 years. i aware rugby world cup, more or less, the name. once few moon, cable surfing the sport channels. the past year, if i remember might see 5 or 10 minutes ( as long, my attention span last to watch any sport on tv. then, i get bored by it.) it was rugby or soccer, i was watching. soccer is one of the few sport that watching over 10 minutes. about 30 or 40 years ago, on psb on weekends, soccer world cup that fun to watch.

i do recommend javelin catchers sport, some athletics can really catch those javelins. others, that who can't catch the javelin, really don't the point of the game.

30 to 40 years ago, i would be more interesting in rugby. since i retired 11 years. i was watching sports back then, because people at work, like to watched and talked about sports.

The English Premier League gets under way today. Rugby being played on a Sunday, eh..? Fancy that.

Leicester vs Northampton looks a juicy match. East Midlands bragging rights are up for grabs and even though there won't be a crowd at the match (covid restrictions still in force), the players won't be any the less committed for the lack of atmosphere.

It's one of the funny things about rugby. Whereas other sports crave big crowds and a lot of press and TV coverate, Rugby is still all about the players. For sure, crowds matter as far as revenue and atmosphere are concerned, but the game has never lost the mindset that, first and foremost, it's the thirty hooligans on the field who matter the most.

In other fixtures, Saracens take on Exeter, London Irish play Worcester and Bath make the trip to Sale.

Blackheath should have played at Rosslyn Park yesterday..... that game usually produces a good social in the bar afterwards.... but it was postponed. Boooooooooo...!!!

Play up The Club..!!

It looks like here in the states we would have to sign up for NBC Gold Rugby Pass for an $80 subscription from August to November.

That sounds like a lot. What are you getting for your money...? Do you get the international matches included in that...?

We subscribe to Sky Sports which gives us football, rugby, cricket, Fi Racing, Diamond League Athletics, and loads more besides.

That's just the "Rugby Pass" which includes"
Gallagher Premiership Rugby League
Heineken Champions Cup
Select World Rugby 7 Series
and Guinness Six Nations

Other "Passes" at other rates for Cycling, Lacross, Track and Field, motocross ...
Premier Soccer League matches are sometimes shown on NBC broadcast, and they now have a Free Streaming service (+ additional paid content)

Yes $80 for just one sport is a lot.

Sheesh.... we pay £30 a month (about $38) for Sky Sports. Oh, and as well as the sports I listed above, we get golf, NFL, baseball, Indycar and NBA. Dolphins are playing Patriots Live on Sky right now.

We also subscribe to Eurosport because wife likes tennis, daughter loves swimming and me and wifey both love netball and winter sport, which aren't covered by Sky. Eurosport is quite cheap but there are a lot of ads, which the British are quite averse to (we're spoiled by Auntie Beeb) and you have to pay a separate sub to get Eurosport Player service for other devices like tablets and phones.

But I wouldn't miss netball or the World Cup skiing during the dark months for anything.
