i think you get wound up because you love a bloody good row. It's like throwing crumbs to the pigeons with you. When it comes to the other member/poster on here, well you would say that because he's got his head shoved up your a**e. And i wont back down on Fast tracking, i believe it to be an insult too those serving and also an insult to those being fast tracked. I disagree that university graduates are the right people for senior police positions because they usually have a very left wing view of the world. I remember a senior female police officer smugly saying in an interview about the rise in female officers that ' it's not about muscle anymore, it's about intelligence!' Shortly after that two female cops were slaughtered ( R.I.P Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone ). when it comes to who should be in higher positions in the police force it strikes me that the police were doing a pretty good job of keeping order when the top people came through the ranks but now it is on the verge of collapse. Anyway, i don't want to say anything personal about your wife Amanda, because i admire and applaud anyone who steps into a police role, regardless of their method of entry. But, i'll give you my view on female police officers. I watch tv shows about policing and whenever there is a fight with scumbags the female officers are either standing to the side whilst letting the guys risk themselves or joining in and not being too effective. ( must be some exceptions of course. I saw a video taken from a window of 2/3 female Swedish cops trying to control a few guys. We got to see them embarrassing themselves because they were so clueless, and in the meaantime the filmers were laughing their heads off. So, i respect female police officers for being brave enough to face the scumbags, but i do worry about them in those situations. With regard charles de Menezes, i distinctly remember at the time ( thinking a terrorist was killed )that i turned to a work colleague and said 'i hope he was as terrified as those bombing victims!' ( and that was back in my labour voting days ). Obviously when it turned out to be a Brazillian i was extremely annoyed. With regard the bullets richocheting, i think they were soft tipped which makes them stay in a body, but don't quote me on that. With Cressida d***, even though, as you say, she led a charmed life, couldn't that have been down to 'fast tracking internally' You know, as an attempt to raise the female quotas in high positions? ( genuine question. There you go... A mini essay. Have fun.

It seems from your posts that your entire life experience comes from what you see on television or in movies. Don't you ever go out..?

Just out of interest, it might be relevant if you told us what you do for a living. Nothing too revealing, just a broad outline. I've given you a bit of my background, you might like to enlighten us a little about yourself. Fair's fair.

It'd help us to understand a bit more about your experience. After all, you have a lot of bizarre opinions. They have to come from somewhere.

But I had to chuckle when I read the part in your post about your watching cop shows. We used to have a little laugh in the lab at shows like Waking The Dead and Silent Witness. The viewing public really think they're seeing how investigations are actually carried out. The thing that made wife laugh was that these shows make offenders think they are now "forensically aware"... that they now know what to avoid doing in order not to leave evidence behind. They couldn't be further from the truth.

Most of these shows inform viewers, in their credits, that the makers have taken scientific advice from this or that professor or whoever, and the public think that the programme makers are being conscientious in giving their shows scientific authenticity. In truth, the advice they're being given is what NOT to show. That is, the programme makers take scientific advice in order to be responsible by not including any of the things we actually do in the real world.

Nobody gets any "tips of the trade" from us. No scientific advisor would knowingly give any TV maker advice that would lead to details of genuine investigatory practice being included in a programme.

But in formal police interviews, it's quite common for anything that IS shown on TV to start turning up in responses given by suspects. "I know all about what you lot look for." That sort of thing.

No they don't.

So I'm glad you enjoy the fantasy world of the box and the cinema. And from the responses you've made in a number of posts I'm thinking that the little deflections inserted into these works of fiction have been effective.

You know far less than you think you do.

"Taken" has to be one of the silliest films ever made. I don't blame Liam Neeson for that. He's just an actor who played the part for the pay packet and probably laughs at the gullibility of those who take it seriously.

I'd like to ask you: What's wrong with being a bleeding heart, nuanced, leftie..? It's almost as if you're saying it's a bad thing.

Quantify that assessment. Please

Taken resonates with the male instinct to protect females and members of the family ( of course i realize that you see this as an example of the evil patriarchy. ) And the bleeding heart , nuanced lefties always seem to take the side of those that are railing against the established rules of society. So yes, the lefties are a bad thing.

Why are we so demonized ?

Riot cops are anti American.

What you are doing is wholly counterproductive to your goals...

If you want your voice heard and respected, you need to remove your violence and physical aggression towards others and others’ property. Rioting and looting only takes away from your message and redirects the spotlight instead on your destruction, pissing a lot of people off that would have otherwise listened to you.

Note, that what you are doing is quite different than what the likes of Gandhi and MLK did. Yes, both they and you advocate(d) forms of civil disobedience, and were/are certainly not placid like today’s peaceful marches, but their form of civil disobedience did not involve violence towards their targets, and can be much more effective as such:

Joining their causes at their times required a sacrifice that was very much like joining a battle - you could have been physically hurt, incarcerated, even killed, and anyone willing to do what they did in their civil disobedience knew these risks and partook in them anyways.

In fact, it was due the way those in charge countered via violent and forceful actions that these protests gained a national and/or international spotlight, and intensified the outcry against the injustices that were being protested. This, in turn, ended up speeding up reform.

Gandhi and MLK got what they wanted because of the violence on the other side, not their side.

Let’s take a look at the current protests...

George Floyd pleading for his life while being forced in a neck hold sparked an international outcry and mass protests that took place despite being in the midst of a pandemic.

Rioting and looting intensified the response against the protests, prompting many to cry for a need to establish law and order, and spurring to action various militias, fed agencies, and riot police.

Trump took advantage of this situation from a PR perspective and sent soldiers and tear gas flying to clear a pathway through peaceful protesters to establish a photo op session as the leader of this push for law and order. This action by Trump sparked a huge national outcry, including an outcry against riot police in general.

Now, I ask you, which of these three actions promoted your message and which of these took away from your message? After answering that, examine, if you will, which side was violent in each?

See the correlation?

Time to change your strategy.

Sacrifice can still be made.

“If a man hasn't found something he will die for, he isn't fit to live.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

AWwwww, OK... it was starting to get boring anyway.

I'll go back to fair discussion and we'll see how long it is before "leftie", "scumbag", "scrounger", and other pejoratives make their way back into the discussion.

Riot cops seem to me to be a consequence of the society that America has built rather than being anti to the concept of the Constitution.

From this side of the pond, there seems to be a country that is deeply divided along racial, ethnic and religious grounds in many ways, where the different groups seem unable to tolerate each other comfortably with regard to religion, and almost not at all where ethnicity and race is concerned.

America has not been kind to the descendants of slaves and if there is a disconnect between what America is and stands for, that can hardly be surprising.

The best way to deal with their just and legitimate complaints would have been to listen to them. Instead, they have been beaten down with riot batons. Little wonder then, that they are angry.

Until they are listened to and redress made, nothing will ever be resolved.

And nothing will be ever made better with riot batons, tear gas and choking the life out of people by kneeling on their neck.

Just for the record, i never once used the word 'scrounger' and i never used the word scumbag against any members, it was reserved for criminals. I did throw leftie around though.

Point taken and acknowledged. However, it is the use of such rhetoric at all and in any context that ups the ante on discussions. It only produces retaliations - of which I freely admit to being one of the guilty parties - and in the end the whole thing deteriorates to a slanging match which is unproductive.

People feel oppressed.... howled down... by such verbiage and it's very difficult not to respond in kind. I will not be howled down, or forced into a defensive position by such aggression. Rather, I'll metaphorically roll my sleeves up and come right back at you.

I cut my teeth in the combative world of student politics. That's a tough bearpit to learn in.

Just because an opinion doesn't come from the same part of the political spectrum as yours doesn't necessarily make it diametrically extreme as yours. An unfavourable comment to an extreme right wing message doesn't necessarily mean the response is from the extreme left wing.

In my time on this forum I've locked horns with Boxer (remember him..?), the Australian, Bob the Fisherman and now you. It seems that no sooner does one depart, then another with almost exactly the same views pops up. I sometimes wonder if it's the same person trying to re-invent himself. It's a suspicion that crosses my mind, but I discount it in an attempt to show at least some faith in human decency.

Boxer even attempted to pretend he was a gay man, for what reason I don't know (well, I had my suspicions), but I saw through him. He thought just saying it would suffice, but he didn't do his homework and fell down too many times when I attempted to make discussion on the sort of things any member of the LGBT community would know. Honestly.... he didn't have a clue about gay culture, points of view or any of the political things that matter to us. My use of simple phrases and slang completely baffled him. He was just....... wrong.

The world of internet forums provides anonymity and some use this as a cover for all sort of extremes. Well, that's their privilege. But it's soon seen through and when it is, claiming to be any sort of moderate just doesn't wash.

You can hide your face. You can hide your name. But you can't hide your point of view when you're putting it out there in the most brazen terms. And you have to expect to be challenged and taken to task for it.

So how about a sort of "Pax Fora". Let's try to at least tone down the ferocity of the rhetoric. I'm not asking you to change your position on issues. I want a rollicking good debate on any topic and I'd be appalled if you changed your point of view (which I don't think will happen anyway).

Some rudeness is allowed... that's what the message at the foot of the box says. But let's not abuse the privilege. Agreed...?

So we probably shouldn’t discuss former members.

But for record boxer exists, and is a gay male and is not bob.

I can confirm this from outside tfs, and in ways I’m certain I was not being catfished on those facts.

Like the front page post implies. I have meet and spoken to a few people outside the forum. I don’t know everything and can’t vouch for everyone, but there are several here I know exist outside an account on TFS.

Also Jen, you keep excluding me from the lgbtq community, even though I’m very much a part of it, just not the stereotypical way you expect. It’s cool. We are all different
It’s ok.
You can be lgbtq without being given a secret code book of phrases, memos, and decoder rings. — or if so that is yet one more of my items the post office has lost.

It really would be boring if humans were all the same or predictable.

Albeit, less frustrating, but I’ve come to the point I accept the extremes, and just decide there are are people I need to be done with. I can’t change them, so arguing only upsets me. I chose to not waste energy that way.

Not at all suggesting there is a "secret code" of any sort, just certain practices, ways, patterns of behaviour, usages of slang and and other things that any individual who has been around the scene for any amount of time would reasonably be expected to know. OK, so some things may pass people by, but his level of non-knowledge was too much.

Example I can remember..... for some reason the subject was condoms and I commented on them. He came back with the reply "What use would a lesbian have for condoms?" Epic fail. Sheesh... I had to tell him that the more promiscuous girls on the scene use them for protection when sharing sex toys.

He didn't know that...!! Over here, bars and clubs have condom machines in women's toilets.

It's a bit like gaydar. It isn't any sort of "radar" but more like body language, looks, touches, comments, smiles and eye contact. All out there in the world for all to see, but picked up by those who are sensitive to it.

Perhaps I'm just more sensitive to these things than most, or its more prevalent on this side of the pond.

I think it’s probably more of a British/American thing.

I know what you mean on the “gaydar”. I can almost always recognize other Americans, I have trouble sometimes with people that have immigrated recently from other cultures. Behavior is just slightly different
Not being judgy, my education is in sociology, with a strong interest in American studies. I’d probably get a second masters in it, if I applied the time. Current socio-political events here, have sort of reset some personal goals from the lofty to the practical.

Maybe in a couple years, when things stablelize, or the whole Country goes mad max and academics don’t matter in the same way.
